Is there any hope of a Savage 300 ultra mag ever again?
« on: September 11, 2007, 05:16:39 AM »
Years ago I screwed up and bought a Remington BDL in 300 ultra mag.  I chose it over a savage because of the feel and it shot like crap  so I sold it.  Since then Savage quit making rifles chambered in 300 RUM and now I'm stuck.  I'd like to get my dirty hands on one because they fill a nice gap between the 30-06 and 338 win mag at least in my opinion.

How would I go about building a new 300 RUM out of Savage parts?  Can I do that or did i just miss the boat all together?

At one time, Midway offered replacement barrels for Savage. I don't know if the UltraMag was one of tehm but it mat be worth a sot. All ya got have is a rifle, barrel clamp and wrench for the barrel nut. A headspace gage would probably be a good idea aslo. I think the long acton will accomodate the UltraMag.

Ted,

I believe the ultramag barrels have a bigger shank then standard barrels, hence they may not fit in a contemporary long action (even those from win mags and such).

The place to go is Savageshooters <dot> com into their forum.  Everything you ever wanted to know.  Don't be afraid to ask.  (But do a search of the forum first)

I was looking at Midway's site yeserday and they don't list an UltraMag barrel. GunParts may though.

NC,
I didn't think about the action size. A guy I know rebarreled a 7MM MAG 700 Rem to 7MM STW. Turned out he had a singleshot. You had to remove the bolt to get another shell in it.

Some of the early RUMs and WSMs came from the factory in small shank barrels, no problems there that I've heard of.  Having to go single shot is a definate possibilty depending on bullet choice and how you seat them(even with the RUM mag box).
