I carry a 30-06 Handi all the time in winter.  I take everything from foxes to wolves (bigger than some whitetails I have taken), by using Barnes solids in 125gr.  No expansion just a hole in and out.  Yea they usually run off, but in the snow they are easy to track.  And if I don't go after them right away they will lye down and die near the trail.  The rest of the year I carry 165gr Sierria Boattails, or Nosler 180gr partitions.

Plus it keeps life exciting, for this old fat man with a bad ticker.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My first answer was derived from how I learned to hunt. I was a kid with a Stevens single shot twenty ga. This was the only gun I owned. I'd leave the house early in the morning with shot shells in my right pocket and a few slugs in the left. I would take off across the pasture looking for quail, drop down on the railroad right of way kicking the brush for rabbits, then climb the hill to the back lot to still hunt for squirrel and possibly a deer. Most all of the seasons were open at the same time then. If I ran across a varmint, I was varmint hunting. If a mud duck jumped off of the creek, I was duck hunting. I'd go home when it got dark. Made the awful mistake of shooting a big woodpecker once, my dad made a small fire and roasted that thing into a burnt offering. He made me eat enough of it to make his point; don't shoot anything you don't intend on eating. He asked me afterward what I was thinking, as I was being uncharacteristically quiet. I told him I was glad I didn't shoot a skunk.

I didn't vote.  I really don't think the question should be allowed here.  A man NEEDS at least one gun for every kind of hunting.  Sometimes more.   ;D

I'm all for the old thuty-thuty. people who don't reload for it don't realize everything it can do with lightweight bullets. When shooting it from a handi you can also load pretty little pointy bullets as well.

You betcha!! But I don't think Dale is asking this question based on a Handi, or he wouldn'd have include chamberings that aren't available. So having multiple rifles in bolt action platforms isn't as financially doable, just my opinion. ;)

I voted .243, have used mine since 1980 in fact it's the only center fire that I own...

I'll go you one better, if your gun likes the Federal Premium 85gr HPBT, it works very well for both...

I voted for the 257 Bob but I like the 260 too. Both have mild recoil with light varmint bullets where really good accuracy is a must. This is a great thread and this discussion could go on for ever as person preferences are so varied.  I own the Bob and my son owns the 260. Great cartridges in their own right. The 6mm Remington somehow got forgotten along the way but it too is one I tend to favor. But I must say that I can find good things to say about any round------------------or rifle as we can NEVER have too many of either!

I have to say it has turned out to be a pretty good thread. I still want to know who voted for the 50 BMG?   Dale

30/30 is all I had for years
Mine shoots factory 125 federal hollow points just fine.
There not pointed but the coyotes don't mind.
The accelerators make it a nice walking varmint rifle.
170 grain will shoot though a tree and still kill a whitetail.

When I ordered a hammer spring for the H&R 157 I ordered a lee 113 soup can mold and lee sizer  Our club range is just 50 yards  It is shooting 3/4" groups at that range with everything from light cast loads  to 31 gr. imr 4895 and 150 flat points, that gun starting to missfire  was a hidden blessing If it had not malfunctioned I would have sold a great gun . I've got some 113 gr. cast bullets at about 1200 to 1300 fps loaded up and ready to ruin a bushytales day sat.

ONE round to do a multitude of tasks!?  Why, ONE round equates to ONE rifle!  That thought is to horrible to imagine!  :o  You must have been talking to my wife to come up with such a question!  "why do you need so many guns?" "why can't you use just one gun for everything?"   ::)  I mean, gee wizz!  Anybody knows there are BIG varmints and LITTLE varmints!  Varmints of all sizes, shapes and descriptions!  And don't even get me started on the different rifles I need... YES NEED... to hunt deer!  Matter of fact, I think I got just about all of those on your list and then some.  Just one caliber/rifle!?  I'll bet a person who could even come up with a question like that could think of a reason to vote for a woman for President!   ;)

I'm a little disappointed that you stopped at the 50 cal, Dale.
what about the M79 grenade launcher, or the RPG, or the S.A.W. ?
the list could go on and on, all these would make a good show on yotes, chucks or whitetails,  ;D
come to think of it,  my brother owns a working 4lbs. civil war cannon... fire that baby off and you can harvest 3 or 4 deer at oncem if they are standing close to each other, lol

I voted for the 25-06 and I don't own a 25-06. Why? 'Cause if I owned a 25-06, I'd have to sell all my other guns. So, I will never own a 25-06.

Looks like the 243 is in the lead with the 25-06 in second place so far.  Dale
