Winchester Model 70 barrel (Pre 64?)
« on: September 12, 2007, 02:15:03 PM »
I have a Winchester Model 70 BARREL ONLY and the stock for it. Stamped on the bbl is "Winchester proof steel, - Model 70 -.30Gov't 06".  On the bottom/underside of the bbl, just ahead of the threads is stamped, "1906" then looks like a triangle then the number 37 right next to an index mark.  How do I determine if this bbl is Pre-64 or is this impossible? Thanks in advance.  Blaster (Bob in So. CO)

Is there a swelled spot in the middle of the barrel? If yes it is for the front screw. Also if you look at the front sight is looks like it is milled on the barrel. Last if you look in the chamber end it will be cut out on the right hand side for the claw extractor.  Ron

Ron, sorry for the delay in responding.  I am out on the road right not but will check out the bbl when I get home and respond accordingly.  Thanks for your interest in helping me.  Blaster (Bob in So. CO)

Ron, here is a picture of the swell mid-bbl.  And, there is a cut out for the extractor on the right side.

Ron, thanks for the confirmation that what I have is a pre-64 bbl/stock.  Now, I'll take the pair to the Tulsa Gun Show and see what I can get for em.  I am hoping there is at least a little interest and demand for this kind of Win. stuff.  Thanks again.  Blaster (Bob in So. CO)

I'd be tempted to find an action and put it back together.  The stock can still be sold on eBay and would bring no telling what.

Although a guy can NEVER have TOO many guns, I don't really need another .30/06 so hopefully I'll be able to sell/trade it down at the Tulsa show in only 2 1/2 weeks.  Thanks!
