Hornady SST Ballistic Question
« on: September 12, 2007, 05:54:03 PM »
I decided to try the 250 grn. SST's last weekend and it seems my .50 T/C Black Diamond really likes them!
I was shooting them over two Triple 7 50 grn pellets. I always try new loads starting at 50 yards out of a lead sled rest.
I was wondering if anyone has any ballistic data for these bullets with the set up I was using? Was wondering what the energy and bullet drop would be from 50 yards on out to 200. I'm having trouble tracking down this info on the web. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I don't have any ballistic data as fare as numbers for this bullet. I only shoot the 250 SST bullet in my Encore and Savage Smokeless rifles. I have taken a lot of deer with this bullet. My Encore load 130 Gr's. Pyrodex pellets with a Remington clean bore primer. Zero at 100 Yd's and it drops 9" below point of aim at 200 Yds.

My Savage Smokeless Muzzle loader, 65 Gr's H-4198, 209 CCI  Mag. primer. Zero at 100 Yd's. and it drops 7" below point of aim.

I hope this helps I have shot a lot of different bullets. But keep coming back to the Hornady 250 SST as my deer hunting bullet. My opinion for the price it can't be beat now.

i think that the velocity is about 1800 fps.   Just started using 777 in my .50 Encore.   Prior to that my favorite load was a 250 grain SST and 90 grains of JSG:   Killed three deer and 7 or 8 hogs with that load.  All were bang flops except for one deer.  The SST is a very good bullet.

Thanks for the input guys. I had been a huge fan of the .40cal 240grn Dead Center. Very accurate, but due to the design of this bullet the deer did seem to make quite a run after being hit in the boiler room. I have MS and long tracking/dragging jobs are not what they used to be for me, so I needed a bullet that was almost as acurate as the DC but for lack of a better term "mushroomed" better thus resulting in quicker kills. I realize nothing is a given with MZ hunting, but a bullet that drops them quicker from the point of impact makes my life alot easier in the field.

Moved back to 100 yards this afternoon and three shots grouped well but were about 5" high. Does this seem correct? 3" high at 50yds, and 5" high at 100. Almost makes me think that I may be close to zero between 175-200 yards huh?
Thanks again!

Here is a chart for one of the loads I shoot with the 250 Shockwave and 100gr of loose 777 (same bullet but loose is a bit more powerful).

Name: .45 Cal, TC Shockwave, 250 grn
Ballistic Coeff: 0.210
Bullet Weight: 250
Velocity: 1850
Target Distance: 100
Scope Height: 1.500
Temperature: 70
Altitude: 500

Ballistic Data
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Range  Elevation  Velocity   Energy     ETA         Drop      Max Y  10mph Wind Deflect
  0 yds   -1.50 in  1850 fps  1900 fpe  0.000 sec    0.00 in  -1.50 in    0.00 in
 25 yds   -0.01 in  1768 fps  1736 fpe  0.042 sec    0.33 in  -0.52 in    0.22 in
 50 yds    0.77 in  1689 fps  1584 fpe  0.086 sec    1.37 in  -0.24 in    0.79 in
 75 yds    0.79 in  1613 fps  1444 fpe  0.131 sec    3.18 in   0.24 in    1.69 in
100 yds    0.00 in  1539 fps  1315 fpe  0.179 sec    5.79 in   0.95 in    2.88 in
125 yds   -1.70 in  1469 fps  1197 fpe  0.228 sec    9.31 in   1.93 in    4.47 in
150 yds   -4.42 in  1402 fps  1092 fpe  0.280 sec   13.86 in   3.22 in    6.53 in
175 yds   -8.29 in  1341 fps   998 fpe  0.335 sec   19.55 in   4.87 in    9.08 in
200 yds  -13.34 in  1283 fps   913 fpe  0.393 sec   26.43 in   6.89 in   12.01 in
225 yds  -19.69 in  1229 fps   839 fpe  0.452 sec   34.59 in   9.34 in   15.36 in
250 yds  -27.52 in  1181 fps   774 fpe  0.514 sec   44.25 in  12.26 in   19.20 in
If your 3" high at 50 you are going to be high at 100 for sure with that load. This is what it would look like.
I would probably sight in around 2.5 to 3 inches high at 100 yards to maximise my point blank range and go with that. You would have point and shoot out to around 165 to 175 yards. Good luck with it.
It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.
W O W!!!!
Thank you very much for the detailed information! I was thinking of going back to loose Triple 7 now that I have more time on my hands. I will take your advice and a copy of this chart with me to the range the next time out to see how close my gun is to it.
Again, I cannot express enough gratitude for this information.
Thank you,
-Tom
DMurphy- I have spent more time reviewing this information and was wondering what "Drop" & "Max Y" stood for on the far right side of the data?
Thanks again!
The drop column is total drop from the muzzle. Gravity takes over as soon as it exits so if the barrel was perfectly level this is the drop you would see from the barrels axis or line of sight.
I am not sure of the definition of max Y and I don't have the software right here to check it. I will try to get that for you but to tell you the truth I've never really used that info, just the trajectory, speed and energy info.
Thanks again for your response.
I loaded up a few containers with loose powder in 90, 100, & 105 grains to see if they shoot better than the pellets.
