17 Rem in Contender???
« on: June 09, 2003, 02:28:10 AM »
I done got a hankering. I just took a look at some 17 Remington ammo and now it's got me thinking I need one more carbine barrel for my Contender.

So here I am at the GBO index of knowledge with the question "Have you had one of these and what did you think of it?"

Looking at the 21" T/C carbine barrel. Should I quit looking at this funny little bullet and go with something else?

What is the noise level compaired to a 22Mag or 223 Remington?

The 17 Rem is either a love or hate proposition.  There are all kinds of stories about how bad they foul and how a puff of wind will move the bullet drastically.  I have had very good experiences with the 3 rifles I have in that caliber.  Two are Rem 700 BDLs and the other is a 21" Contender.  Reloading makes the most sense in the 17's.  Factory ammo is not really common and sometimes pricey.  Mine are all super accurate and you can see the bullet hit through the scope.  Noise level is more than 22 mag and not noticeably different than 223.

I done got a hankering also.  So I ordered a 22" full bull barrel from vvcg for my contenter and a 2 1/4 wide forearm with finger groves.  I will be finding out about this cartage in the future.  I have been looking a the 25 gr dbl hp bullet offed by James Calhoon.  Has any one out there tryed them in the 17 rem??  My main use for this gun will be for shooting P-dogs.

Happy shooting, may you hit what you aim at.

I have been shooting the 17 for about 5 years now and it is has been the most rewarding purchase I have made in a long time.  There are at least 150 or so coyotes that will attest to the lethality of the little bullet.  I have shot several bulllets to include the Calhoon.  My preference is the 30 grain berger.  Second would be the 25 grain hornady.

I have a TC factory super 14 barrel in 17 rem set up with the old Fajen big shot grips - kind of looks like a mini carbine.  I just love this gun, really great on P-dogs.  Mine is set up with a 2.5 - 8 x weaver scope, but I think I could extend the range of it even further by getting one of the Burris ballistic plex 3-12 scopes.  Recoil is light, and noise level is right on par with my 223 super 14.

that just shoots great, it is set up for varmint with a 6-24 scope and is just a dream to fire. only problem is I don't hunt it if I can't eat it these days. so for now it is just great punching little holes in paper. not sure I would ever get rid of it but unless you like varmint hunting, the bullets are too explosive. I tried on rabbit ONCE, poor guy, nothing left. Raymond
