45-70loads

hey Quick  could you give me some starting loads for my 45-70bc? i would like some load data for a 500grain bullet mild to mid range  thinks bill

I haven't shot any 500gr bullets in my 45-70 BC, so I don't have a recommended load that I've worked with, but Bernie shoots a 500gr Lee bullet in his with both smokeless and blackpowder, I didn't find his load, but he has mentioned 1700fps with smokeless and uses ADI2208 since he's in Australia, the equivilent on the ADI chart is Varget which is recommended in some data. If you want to stay in trapdoor levels, the Lyman 48th lists the same bullet he's using with Varget as 40gr start, 43.5grmax, Rem 9½, Rem brass, with a COL of 2.990", but you may have an issue loading it that long, I throated all of mine due to that very issue, the throat is too short, some barrels aren't so bad tho. They don't show any 500gr cast bullet data in their levergun data, only up to 405gr.

Accurate list 500gr bullets in all load levels, their Ruger data is within 40kpsi which is considered levergun data by Hornady and Hodgdon, but be aware the recoil with those loads will hurt ya, it would be wise to start in the upper trapdoor or low levergun data and work up to you pain threshold!!

The Beartooth Piledriver data could be used with 500gr cast bullets also. I wouldn't recommend using any 500gr jacketed bullet, they're made for velocities much higher than the 45-70 is capable of.

thinks Quick ill look the data over  . ill be shooting cast bullets out of a Lyman mold . i shoot 300grain most time are 405.  but just wanted to try the 500

Quick i loaded some 500grain cast bullets for my buffalo classic was just seeing were i could seat the bullet to i stop ed at 2.667 loaded some to around 1150fps  shot very well for just throwing things together . thinks for the help im going to work on a load for it and see how far out i can seat the bullet dont want to much more speed out of it . it was not to bad to shoot at that speed
