Gottem comin'... thanks everyone!
« on: June 09, 2003, 02:58:06 AM »
With all the help I have all my supplies ordered expect caps 'n powder and I'll keep looking till I find someone that has those in stock.  I'll definitely choose the Rem #10 caps and think I'd like to try 3f 777 or goex powder.
Hope to be shootin' this weekend...

I am a Pietta man, but by all accounts you have the Cadillac  of cap and ball pistols. Have fun!

I am looking forward to it when I can get the powder and caps.  I tried again Monday at lunch and so far I have not found any fffg or #10 caps.  A couple places offered to order what I need so I may look into that.

If you can't find #10 caps, #11 will work, with a little effort.  Each cap needs to be squeezed a little to make the brass skirt an oval rather than a circle.  This will allow them to grip the #10 nipple adequately to use.  It means that you have to touch every one of the caps, you can't simply pour them into the snail capper and use them as you could with #10 caps.

You don't list a location, often someone on this board will be local and know of a place you may find what you want.

Hey Wayne,
I'm from Monroe, LA.  Just put NE Louisiana in my profile because people around the country can relate to that location.  Most have probably not heard of Monroe.
I had read on the board about pinching the #11 caps but for my first outting with bp I was trying to find some #10's just to make sure everything went as smoothly as possible.  I had Simmons Sporting Goods  www.simmonssportinggoods.com  order the caps and 3fg triple7 powder for me today.  They are just down the road a bit and always been good place for me to deal with.  Anxiously waiting for my first shot.

Isn't it great to have a good shop close?  Do they have a gunsmith?  that's the other thing you'll eventually need if you are really into this sport.

Gunsmith

I'm sure they do but I haven't asked.  One of my biggest buds was the premiere gunsmith here for years but after closing shop he relocated to Atlanta and was working for the IRS last I heard.  After that I was using another friend that did repairs after work but he quit because of regulations and liability issues.  The simple stuff I've been doing myself but I'm certainly not to be confused with a gunsmith.
Have a good one,

You won't be honing your "gunsmithing" skills on your Ruger Old Army.  While others are tinkering with their revolvers....you'll be shooting yours!

Chris is right. If you want to get into gunsmithing, get rid of that Ruger, just get an Italian gun.
I don't mind it though, it is good to get to know your gun. The spare parts are cheap and easy to install.
In defense of my Pietta, I have to say, I have cocked the damn thing and aimed it at the tv about 700 times while watching "Outlaw Josey Wales", though I have only fired 25 rounds through it. So the springs have gotten a workout.
Still, I have cocked my Ruger Single Six just as many times and have never  broken a spring.

Although I do enjoy tinkering with handguns I never enjoy when something goes wrong with mine so I'm with ya'll and hope this OA keeps on performing like it did for the previous owner.

Stuff I ordered from Cablea's came yesterday now all I need is the 3fg triple seven and Rem #10 caps I ordered from the sporting goods store.  Hoped they would be here today but have been sick last couple of days  so maybe couldn't shoot Saturday anyway.
