Scope base blocking my iron sights, Marlin model 30AS
« on: September 14, 2007, 12:10:22 AM »
Since this rifle has the shorter dovetail mounted front sight instead of a ramp front, I've found the Weaver base to block my sights.  I have an old El-Paso Weaver 1.5x5 mounted with Warne QR rings.  My intention was/is to mostly use iron sight, attach the scope as the situation calls for.  Are there any replacement sights that are taller to aleve this problem or do I need to try to work a trade for a 336?  My rifle is like new, really hate part with it but the ability to use with and without scope is very important to me.  Thanks a bunch!

I guess I think that scope or not is one of those things that need to be decided on in advance.  No mount system that I have ever seen can truly be used to take off a scope, then put it back on without re-zeroing.  Even the quick mount stuff just gets it close.  If that is close enough then so would the iron sights.  If it isn't close enough leave the scope on as zeroed.  The shoot through mounts are also a compromise, putting the scope so far above the barrel that a consistent cheek weld on the stock is impossible.

Agreed. You really need to make up your mind if you want to shoot with iron sights or scope and live with that decision.

Thanks for the advice.  What I'm looking for with this rifle is versatility. I have several bolt guns with glass mounted, not sure my old eyes will work that well with irons these days but I want to give them a try.  I've had pretty good luck with Warne QR rings, I've removed and reattached the scope as much as 8 times, fired a composite group, one round after each reattachment.  The group was under 3", close enough for typical 3030 ranges.  I still need to figure some way to get the sights up over the scope base.

If a three inch group is good enough try a peep site, or one of the red dots.

demented, I completely understand your wanting to use both sighting systems. I've been doing this for years on different rifles and have never had a problem. It really adds to the versatility of your firearm and should something happen to your scope due to a fall or drop you have a back up sighting system that could save your hunt.
I had the same problem as your having on a 1973 model 336A with a 24" barrel that I have had re-chambered to 30-30 Ackley Improved by David Clements. on this gun I was able to install a taller front and rear sight and this worked great.
There are ramp front sight that use a threaded dovetail block that slides into your 3/8th dovetail and a screw goes through the ramp and tightens into the block.
Marlin rear sights on the newer models have replaceable folding rear sight blades in different heights.
I used a tall rear blade and replaced my front with a higher ramp-sight combo and it works great and also looks good too.

Hope this helps!

 GOOD ADVICE!!

I have done this myself on a couple rifles.  BUT, its not the best, its a compromise.

For the best results you should have your face firmly planted on the stock of the firearm. A highly mounted scope or sites will not allow this. Now you may be satisfied with the results and willing to accept this some ore not. The best advice is what Bill said, pick one and live with it.

My own opinion on leverguns is they where made in the days before optical scopes got mounted on them. They are designed for open sites. PEEP sites are the one boon in sighting upgrades for them. I keep my levers with open sites and if I need a scope its on one of my handis or a bolt gun.

Just my humble opinions. ;D

 Good luck,
 CW

I like to shoot my rifle both ways using a scope for load testing and metallic sights for fun...but I prefer a receiver sight.
I sawed off the back end of the Weaver rail (actually made by Leupold) enough to clear a Williams Foolproof.

I really dislike them, but maybe some Kwik-Site Integral See-Thru rings would work for you.

Thanks for the offer but I guess I'll keep on with my original plans.  A 336 will eventually turn up so I can do what I intended.  Actually this rifle was going to be my "truck" gun, kept in a gunsock to keep it clean and rust free, the scope and two or three boxes of ammo in my console for close reference.  Thanks for all the replies, offers and all, hope that sometime in the future I can do the same for some of you.
