17 hmr sucks to clean any tricks

I just had to clean my C-17 american varmit and it took for ever.  I had to scrub and scrub and clean and wet patches.  took for ever.  I was using hoppes.  Is there something that anyone esle uses out there.  please help

Try the foam in a can product. Squirt it down the barrel and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Run the bronze brush through a couple of times, followed by some patches to clean out the buildup and thats it.

I use a bore snake designed for the 17 hmr and Hoppes bore cleaner.

I did not tell you the whole story.  First I used two applications of the bore foam and left it in there for 20 as this is on the instructions. I then used hoppes and a scrub brush and patches.  I literally had to scrub this gun out at least 10 times.  This is using a brush for 20 strokes at a time and then running two wet patches and three dry patches.  I had to do this honestly about 10 times and it took for ever.

i am assuming you are taking about jacket fouling. if so try Sweets 7.62 solvent and follow the instructions. it works well in my hard fouling guns.

I use Barnes CR-10 on several patches followed by WD-40 on a couple and then dry patch. It usually doesn't take more than two rounds like this and they come out clean. Then a patch with light oil for protection.   KN

Out of my 4 17 hmrs 3 of them shoot best when really dirty, but i still try to run a patch through once in a while.  I use burchwood casey bore cleaner, run a wet patch down, let it sit 5 mins or so, then brush it a few times, then run a few patches down, I dont patch the heck out of it though because like i said they shoot better dirty.

Sweets 7.62 works well on my .17 Rem. and .17 HMR.  If you are looking for a perfectly clean patch when you  are done, I don't think that it is possible on the .17's or anything else from my experience.

P.S.
Stay away from stainless steel brushes.  I did ruin a bore with one.

Bore Tech eliminator really takes the copper out and doesn't have ammonia in it. I assume your bullets a copper jacketed.

To too use only a bore snake and hoppes.

I'm not a big fan of heavily cleaning rimfires...the rifling is much too shallow to be running a brush through the bore over and over. The bores are much too small in diameter to be using a rod.

My HMR likes a dirty bore, anyway.

The only cleaning I do with my .22lr's is a dry patch pulled through with a patchworm (pretty much weed-wacker trimming line).

Help is on the way.  I hope you will try what I'm going to tell you.

Buy you a 16oz bottle of Bore Tech Eliminator solvent.  It's a lot cheaper this way.  Buy a 8oz can of KROIL.   Buy a 4oz squeeze bottle.  Pour 2oz of Eliminator into the squeeze bottle followed by 2oz of KROIL.  In other words, your mixing these two 50/50.  You can buy all of this stuff here.  www.midwayusa.com

Use thesqueeze bottle to apply this formula to your brushes or patches.  You will see that it's the best formula that you have used to clean a barrel.  Both of these mixed together will zip a barrel clean faster than anything else I have tried.

The squeeze bottles can be bought at your local pharmacy in the cosmetics dept, I've bought several for exactly the same purpose, gun cleaning/lube!!

The comments on using a squeeze bottle are rite on.  I don't understand why wide mouth bottles became the standard for bore solvent.  Everyone just assumes that you dip the brush into the bottle.  Unfortunately, when you do so you transfer powder residue into your supply of solvent.  Over time, it degrades the performance of the solvent.  If the solvent has a component to remove copper fowling dipping a copper or brass brush will degrade that component.  I learned this hanging around Camp Perry, OH during the National Matches.  I found that serious target shooters know a lot about firearms that us ordinary hunter/shooters don't.  BY the way, I use a mixture of Shooter's Choice and Kroil.

Of course the wide-mouth bottles of solvent become contaminated!  Then you have to buy more before you actually run out!  Good for sales, lousy for the customer.  Sweets 7.62 does come in a squeeze container.

Another vote for Kroil.

A little bit goes along way. After squirting a bit in the breech end, allow it to saturate the barrel.  Scrub generously with a brush then wipe it out with patches.  After about three to four very dirty patches, they become cleaner each time after.

Kroil is great for many uses. 

It does have a strong, lasting smell.  I recommend using it outdoors or in an outbuilding of some type.
