Advice on Scope Power, quick release rings for NEF 30-06?
« on: September 15, 2007, 01:12:23 PM »
Looking to buy a set of quick release rings (high), Scope and flip open scope covers for a NEF in 30-06 for deer hunting.

What combination would you reccomend? What scope power? Maker? Rings? Scope covers? Where can I get them all?

My shots will be under 200 yards, probably 75-100 yards.

Leopold QRWs are my choice, but the Warnes are good too if you don't mind the vertical split rings. If you pay attention to the size of the power ring on the scope you choose, you can mount it much lower without hammer interference.  See the "Rings" link in the FAQs for more info, might as well spend a little time in there, many of the questions you might have, have been asked many times before, you'll find answers there. We'll need to know how much money you want to spend on the scope, too!! ;)

I like the Leupold's a-lot...and have a bunch of them...

but I also like the Warnes as well...split rings and all..they are cheaper and give a great lock up..They go well with the Leupold scopes too..

I completely agree with Tim and Mac!!

I have the Leupold rings on all but my rim-fire handis. They are one of the best IMHO.

I have never owned the WRANE rings. but have mounted many many sets. they are good as well, they are a quality manufacturer and make a great product.

BTW, if you stick with a similar dia power ring...LO rings can be utilized. These in the pic are LO height.

My alltime favorite is the XVII 2X7X32 in matte finish. There is a shotgun version avalible with heavy cross hairs thats very nice too. Not the cheapest nor the most expensive.  The VXI is a little cheaper alternative. I am not a fan of the Rifleman series.

Nikon ProStaff is a popular one with the guys on here as well. Also much cheaper too!!

One I just got and am VERY impressed with is the Pentax GameSeeker 4X32 scope. A bit cheaper than the Nikon and briter with a better field of view.

Well...that's a hard one...I just got a VX-2 6x18 LRV and just love it...I also picked up a nice Nikon Omega 3x9 BDC to night at Cabela's that is exceptionally clear and bright that for my eyes...it gives 6" of eye relief( the box states 5" )...along with a 6x18 Buckmaster last month with the side focus...I have had great luck with the Leupold VX-1 in all power ranges 2x7...3x9...4x12 and use them too...so...my choices might not suit your needs...but...if I had to say which one of my Leupold's have gotten more usage than others...it would be the 4x12 VX-1 and the 2x7 VX-1...This is changing though...and I find myself enjoying the benefits of the higher magnification more...and the 6x setting works fine for me at close yardages...at least with my scopes...

Natchez Shooters Supply ( www.natchezss.com) has Nikon Monarch 3-9X40 matte for $199. You'll have run a search to find it. Product #NK6525.

All good advice. The only thing I would like to add is that Warne manufactures the Leupold QRW rings for Leopold. They are both quality construction, the Warnes can be had for less money, just a matter of personal preference. I have owned the Warne rings for over a dozen years, they are what I prefer, although the Leupold design looks more mechanically sound.
