Marlins I Got...Marlins I Want!
« on: September 16, 2007, 05:58:42 AM »
Hey Guys,

I am a Marlin shooter (not a collector) and I am surpised how well almost all of them shoot.  These are what I have and I don't know what else I need (want):

336W .30-30
336 .35 Remington (This one is a sweet shooter!)
444
1895 .45-70
375 .375 Winchester (My newest old one - got it yesterday)
1894 CL .25-20
336 .32 Special (Bought on an auction and I will get it next week - I really like this cartridge)
39 .22 Rimfire

I sent the .30-30 off to have it rechambered to .307 Winchester so I need to pick up another .30-30.  I guess I need the .32-20 to round it out.  The 39 needs a barrel band to hold the magazine tube on that I have never shot.  I don't even remember where I got it but I'm sure it was a trade in the olden days.  I can't find one that fits.  Ordered two but none of them fit the dovetail in the barrel.  Don't really want the .450 Marlin.  The .45-70 is more than I need and is very flexible.  Most accurate are the .35, .444 and .45-70.  All these will do an inch or better at 100 yards.  All have scopes because I can see the barrel mounted iron sights anymore.  Should I be committed for having all these?  Or do I need more?  My favorite for accuracy right now would be the .45-70.  The one I like shooting the most is the .375.  I am working on developing loads for it and I want to take it deer hunting in a few months.  What do you have and what is your favorite Marlin?  Thanks!  BT 53

In what way ?

My replacement hanger didn't fit either - it was a loose fit in the dovetail - so I staked/peened it in place, with a centerpunch, after centering it side-to-side.  It hasn't moved, since.

Sounds like you got it figured out!  I'd sure like to have another Trip-4, owned two a few years ago, one straight stock, one pistol grip.  Had to sell both to pay bills while I was recovering from two vehicle accidents in the same year.  Never seem to find one when cash is in hand.

No Marlin collection is complete without Marlin MR-7.  One of each caliber.

I know it is a nasty Bolt Action rifle, but it is still a Marlin.

Ranger,

This is an old 39.  Both of the parts I tried were way too small in width to fit the barrel dovetail.  1/8" at least.  Would have to be welded up and ground to fit.  I am looking for one but no luck.

Thanks,

Mine's not a 39, it's a 39a made in 1951.

IMHO, 1/8" is way too much discrepancy, for allowable "tolerances".

Since there's not a whole lot of pressure on the hanger (unless a clamp-on sling swivel's installed on the mag tube), if I had your situation I would side-shim the dovetail with a very small piece of shim stock & cold blue it to match.

Ditto this, I did the same on my 39A.

I have a 336CS 35 Rem.  I sold my 444 a few years ago.  I didn't use it at the time.  Now I regret selling it, have to get another one some day.  I'm pretty sure the next Marlin I'm going to get is going to be a 1984C 357 mag./38 Spec.  I talked to Marlin a while back and they said they would change it from the straight grip stock to the pistol grip stock for me.  I'll have to find out if they'll still do it or not.  I really prefer the pistol grip!

You ought to take a close look at the 1895 XLR, mines a shooter. I also have the 1895 Classic in 45-70 and a 336CS thuty-thuty. The 45-70's are great because you can load them down so far and still have a decent deer rifle that is comfortable to shoot. Remember the old  adage "everbody needs at least two 45-70's".

Best of luck
