Palm Swell
« on: September 16, 2007, 11:10:38 AM »
I have a Kevlar Brown Prec. Pound'r Stock. No Checkering. What would it take to put a Palm Swell on This? I was thinking of marking out My Palm, Put on a surgical Glove, Mix up some JB Weld, and squeeze it on, Forming with My Natural Grip.  Clean up, Then final Shape/Sand when Hard. Are there better ways???

Molding your hand in that manner is likely the only way to get the grip custom fitted exactly as you wish.

You will have to hold it exactly right and keep it from running until the JB sets, maybe three hours or so?  Or you could use a roll of plumbers epoxy putty, it usually sets in maybe 15 minutes.  It is plenty hard and strong enough to drill and tap so I think it would be durable IF you properly prepare the stock.

I would sand the stock grip area I expected to apply the plumbers epoxy to, then drill a series of small holes, about 1/16 and 1/8 deep, all around the area before applying the putty.  That would give both a good surface and some good anchoring points for the expoxy to adhere to.

I get that epoxy from Home Depot and Lowe's, in the plumbing departments.  It is in a plastic blister tube and about the shape and size of a Tootsie Roll candy bar.  It's usually gray but they also had green.  It's much like kids modeling clay, very easy to mix with your fingers, reasonably quick to set and easy to mold while it's soft.

Wet your rubber glove with liquid hand soap for a release agent and it will leave a slick surface to ease your sanding later.

There is JB Kwik. It sets in 4 minutes at room temperature. For some jobs, I like the slower curing JB Weld, but if it is a job that must set up fast, the use the JB Kiik. Directions for use are on the back of the tubes.  ;)

You might consider a peel-n-stick neoprene pad that's sold through Brownells, among others. They stick really well and the soft, sticky rubber aids in getting a grip, even when wet..

I used them before and they stay on real well. The one I put on a Ruger 10//22 mannlicher stock rifle has been there for at least 10 years and is just fine and that rifle has checkering. They're not even very expensive though for the life of me I can't remember what the 2 that I just ordered cost. One is to just have around, the other for the Remington 722 I use for coyotes.. Gets a little slippery with gloves and no checkering. I could just checker it but hate to alter such an unusual rifle in such good shape. I just can't get over how well it shoots.
