Illegal?? it is in Georgia
« on: September 17, 2007, 08:01:30 AM »
I just watched the opening of an episode of Babe Winklemans outdoor secrets and he proceded to shoot a buck that was crossing a body of water. that would be a big fine here in Georgia.
how about other states?  is it legal anywhere?

Was the deer wading or swimming?  'Course that could open up a whole can of worms because some goober would swear "well, I THOUGHT he was wading."

I copied this strait from the 2007-2008 Georgia Hunting Regulations:

Lakes, Streams & Ponds: It is unlawful
to take a deer by any means while it is in a
lake, stream, or pond.

From Maryland's DNR web page

"Deer in Water
Deer may not be hunted while they are swimming or taking refuge in water."

so in MD it is not legal

Illegal here in WV.

I'd not want to drag a soggy deer carcass out of the creek anyway. Damn things are hard enough to drag w/o being soakin' wet and muddy.  :P

If I shoot a buck and it runs into the water, I can't go after it???

What if the water is frozen & the deer is "on" the water, and what if the deer is on land and the hunter is "in" the water?  Is it legal then??

Gonna be difficult, at best, to find "frozen water" in Georgia.  The intent I believe is clear.

As for floating/wading down a stream and taking deer on the land, that is another subject.  Probably legal, but the regulations better be checked first to be sure...wherever you are.  There are some curves in the regs that MUST be complied with or you are illegal.  Period.

No since taking any deer and later finding that it was taken illegally.  Makes the whole experience one that would best be avoided when what you really want is to tell everyone.  Braggin' rights are great when everything is done right.  No sense skirting the regs.
