Good youth 7mm-08 range report
« on: September 17, 2007, 09:13:11 AM »
Yesterday was a good day at the range for me in more ways than one.  I finally got to take my 12yr old daughter to the range to get her some trigger time with her 7mm-08 Handi and its new barrel.  It was warm with wind gusting about 20mph so I didn't bother with the chrono.

41.5gr Varget.  I printed the two at 3:00, then adjusted the windage 3" the wrong way & printed the 3rd further right.  After fixing that I had my daughter shoot one round.  She pushed it left to 9:00.  I raised elevation 3" and printed two at 12:00.  All the rest of our shooting was at this scope setting.

The center holes are loads of H-380 & H-4895.  The upper right is one from my Model 7, 7mm-08 & the lower left is a Hodgdon Youth load of H-4895.  I had to hold high of the paper to get it onto the paper.

When I put up this target she really started having fun!  All we had left for ammo was some of the H-380 & H-4895 loads.  She put the first H-380 round just high & left of center, the second one higher & further out, and the third back next to the first hole.  The two lower left holes were H-4895 loads.  After each shot she raced me for the spotting scope to see where they were going.

At 200yds, I fired two rounds of one load and she fired one of the other.  I don't know whose holes are whose.

She is right handed & left eye dominamt & shoots left handed.  I suspect that's why so many of her shots go left.  We did put a Beartooth comb raising kit on the stock to get her eye in line with the scope.  She's been shooting on a local SCTP trap team all summer and has gotten both very recoil tolerant and good at getting a consistent cheek weld.

All in all we had a good day at the range & she got to blow off a bunch of .22s with her MKII while we let barrels cool.  I will be loading up a bunch more of the Varget loads this week.  We're shooting a precison rifle match this weekend.

Thanks for sharing those pictures!

I've got a 7mm-08 barrel I picked up in the classifieds and I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival so I can get it fitted and out to the range.

Hope to have similar results!

Thanks again, and nice shooting!

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Thanks for the kind comments.  I was about ready to dump this rifle in the Missouri River.  H&R customer service has averted that.  They dressed up the trigger nicely and hardened a few parts too.  I'm anxious to shoot this one some more.  I'll have at least a hundred rounds ready by the weekend.

Maybe I will get myself a .280 after all.

mt-glass...it's really good to hear your daughter will shoot with you...i also have a 12 year old girl...i have trouble getting her to come with me...she's all girl !!...she will from time..to..time..come with me...i can get her to pull the trigger on light recoil rifle's from time..to..time..i don't push her..as i don't want to push her away..she does understand hunting & shooting..based on my "biased" opinion's of course...the other girl's we know have zero idea about the shooting & hunting sport's so i'm just glad my girl is "somewhat" in the circle...good for you !!!
