G-10 vs Micarta
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:30:30 PM »
I am having a knife made and I have narrowed my handle selection down to Micarta or G-10. I was wondering if anyone here could tell me which one is better. This knife is a Bushcraft style and will be a working knife for the outdoors here in Alaska. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

G-10 is stronger, but unless you are driving nails with the stuff you won't tell the difference between G-10 and linen micarta.  I don't think one is more resistant to the elements than the other and either one should last as long as the blade.

SDS-GEN Thank you for the quick reply. I think I am going to have the the handle made with yellow G-10. I figure this way I will be able to see the knife if I drop it by accident. I will post pictures of the knife when I get it but that will be in about 4 months.

Yellow G-10 is nice.   Here's some on a Wharncliffe I made that now resides in Ireland.  Only trouble is, I can only find it in 1/4 inch thickness, and on a bushcraft style knife most have somewhat thicker handles.

Joel thanks for the reply and that is a beautiful knife that you have made. The bushcraft knife I am having made is from Abe Elias in 1095 and he told me that he will either have to use spacers or order some new yellow G-10. I told him either way is fine by me. I just can't wait to get the knife. I have another knife on the way from Jim Whittman of Chugiak Alaska. Hopefully it will be done around October or November and it will be made from AEBl steel with a gold colored micarta handle. I will post a picture when I get the knife.

As a knifemaker, I prefer micarta. I can get it in just about any size/thickness. I can get different weaves for different looks (paper, linen, canvas). My shop only stinks for one day from the dust.
...as a knife user, I prefer G10 and carbon fiber. I hate working it, but love the finished products! You can't go wrong with the toughness of it. Virtually no temp issues, moisture retention or chemical incompatabilities.

Nice knife Joel!

Here's a black G10 handled one I did last year. I like the subtle pattern in G10.
