Fender Skirts

FENDER SKIRTS?

THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!!!!!!
I came across this phrase yesterday "FENDER SKIRTS".

A term I haven't heard in a long time and thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice like "curb feelers"

And "steering knobs." (AKA) suicide knob

Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first.
Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms
to you.
Remember "Continental kits?"
They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?"
At some point "parking brake" became the proper term.  But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake."

I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed."

Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy
to come home, so you could ride the
"running board" up to the house?

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought."
Of course, just about everything is
store-bought these days.
But once it was bragging material to have a
store-bought dress or a store-bought
bag of candy.

"Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing.
Now we take the term "world wide" for granted.
This floors me.

On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes.  In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting!  Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.

When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?"  It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company.
So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply"expecting."

Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just "bra" now "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all.

I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation.

Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-60's word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!

Here's a word I miss - "percolator."
That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with?
"Coffee maker."
How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.

I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "Electrolux." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!"

Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago?
Nobody complains of that anymore.
Maybe that's what castor oil cured,
because I never hear mothers threatening kids
with castor oil anymore.

Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list.  The one that grieves me most "supper."
Now everybody says "dinner."
Save a great word.  Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.

Someone forwarded this to me.
I thought some of us of a "certain age" would remember most of these.

Just for fun, Pass it along to others of
"a certain age"!

Remember well.  I bought my first new car while stationed at Sonderstrom AB, Greenland.  That is, I bought the car in Washington, D.C., and paid for the car while in Greenland.  That was 1957, the car was a 1957 Ford, Fairlane 500, convertible complete with continental kit and fender skirts, white with a blue interior.  I didn't pick the car up until mid 1958 after completing my assignment at Sonderstrom.

I was assigned to Barksdale AFB (Shreveport, LA.) when I returned from overseas.  Two other Airmen at Barksdale owned cars exactly like mine, we all stayed in trouble, being accused for what the others did.

   Hey !

Don't forget the coon tail on the antenna..  Chopped & channeled..dechromed..shaved hood..suicide doors..alcohol instead of "permanent" antifreeze..
   "louvers"..musical horns..and rumble seats..

The  "wing windows" and "vents" on either side or top of the cowling..that let air literally "blast" through the passenger compartment..then came "Astro-ventilation"..which actually means, "we saved a couple bucks by dropping the vents and wing windows"..

   "Cinemascope"..coming to the "drive-in" theatre that is..not restaurant..with "carhops"..

Marijuana & illegal drugs were only used by certain movie stars & big shot musicians..

Leather jackets ..worn by the "rebellious" types..

DA haircuts..as opposed to my own crowd, the "crew cut" types.. Hair styles were a "statement" back then..

TVs were either round screen or like a wheel with a flat on top & bottom..and Faye Emerson made the folks gasp..with her "plunging necklines".

..Ans at least 60% of the guys (and some of the girls) in my high school were hunters..At least 1/3 of the guys I went to school with had some
    experience with trapping..for extra cash.

Most of us did our swimming in a river, creek, lake or pond..

One or two popular "swimming holes" known to everyone in every small town..usually had a swing-rope hanging from a tree..

Most girls were "good girls" with one or two "bad girls"..both pretty tame by some of today's standards !

    Not much loitering around the streets during early morning hours..for we farm boys, after a days work in the fields;
  ..a swim , perhaps a movie..then a welcome, well earned sleep ..

For a time, we were kept away from swimming on "dog days"..until the cause of Polio was solved..

Memories..the screech of a locust in midsummer heat..while popping tar bubbles in the road with bare toes...

Roasting corn "borrowed" from a field (field corn) near the old swimming hole..

   Halloween; lots of pranks..no destruction..

   Ah memories !

And remember the dimmer switch used to be on the floor and you had to make sure it was on low beam if you met a car and had to depress the clutch pedal while changing gears.

 Almtnman;

Although the dimmer switch is in a handier location...I still depress the clutch..in both my car and truck...LOL

I've been driving since 1953 and have usually had two vehicles continually, trading each every 3rd year or so...

Of all these, only ONE had  automatic transmission ..and I didn't keep it very long ! ..LOL

You guys do it better than I do.
I do remember what it was like to NOT have A/C in the car and I don't like to remember that.
Come too think of it, there are some things I would just as soon not remember--but mostly I just don't remember in general.

  C'mon William;

We didn't have air conditioning..but those wing windows and pop out vents we had did help..

     ...And the hand choke;

As a young GI serving at Ft Hood in 1956, I was riding with Earl, a fellow GI, in his 1950 Ford tudor...leaving Killeen, heading east..

It seems Earl anticipated the end of the speed limit about  a half mile too early...spotted a highway patrol car clocking us from behind a building.

The constabulary clicked on the red flasher and started after us.

Earl, pulling over..pulled the hand choke out about half way..

When the officer questioned him, Earl claimed his Ford was not running good, "listen to it"..so he was trying to analyze the problem..Earl got a warning but no ticket.

This maneuver must have worked for him back home in Earlham, Iowa...and it worked in Texas...LOL

Not totally honest ..but I don't know if Earl was a Christian..I wasn't at that time..

ironglow, whoever decided to take the pop out vent windows off pickup trucks must not have know about riding around in one in the Fall or Spring with the window open. I have never liked it when they did away with those little vent windows.
