Just ordered a BAR 300 Win Mag
« on: September 18, 2007, 07:31:01 AM »
Well I have been going back and forth on which gun to get, it was between a Benelli R1 or a Browning BAR, I went with the BAR in 300 Win Mag. Now I will top it off with a Leupold VariXII 3X9X50.

Hello Redhawk1, Which model did you order, the Longtrac, Lightweight Stalker or the Safari?
I just got a Safari in 30-06 a few weeks ago and I really like it. I got my dad a lightweight back in the spring and while working up a load for it I knew I was going to have to get one for myself. These guns are a real pleasure to shoot and the accuracy is great.
The first time I ever shot a 300 Win. Mag was about 20 years ago and it was in a BAR. I was dreading the recoil until I shot it and then I wanted to keep shooting it.
The BAR is a great rifle and I'm sure you will like yours. Let us know about it after you get to shoot it!

GOOD SHOOTING!

I ordered the Longtrac, I have shot several of them in the past and loved it. I can't wait for it to get here. ;D

Other than just wanting it (a perfectly valid reason to buy any gun) why a semiauto belted magnum rather than bolt action?  ???

I have a Bano 30-06 bolt action, a Tikka 300 Win Mag Bolt action and a 338 Win Mag bolt action and a few others. I just always wanted a BAR and I really like the 300 Win Mag as an over all cartridge.

I had a Remington model 742 in 30-06 and it was not the best semi-auto rifle in my opinion. So other than just wanting one, I guess there was no other reason.

Well I picked up the gun last night, all I can say is wow, this gun looks like a million bucks. The action is smooth, the trigger is very light and crisp. Now I am going to mount the scope and see what it will do. I already loaded up some ammo to test.  ;D

I had a BAR in 300 mag and loved it. The recoil was light due to the Boss system which also aided it accuracy. It was the Safari grade and was beautiful. Caution must be taken when choosing a powder since a slow burning powder can damage the gas system. I scoped this gun with  Leopold 2.5-8x which was perfect for me. I took countless deer with this rifle. I speak of this gun in the past tense since it traded it for a Springfield M1A. It is still a great gun, just some one elses gun. Does your new gun have the Boss System on it?

Cheese, no I did not want the boss system. My buddy has a BAR also in 300 WM and loves it.

Now all I have to do is go out and shoot it. Scope is mounted and it looks great.

Hello...

I had had a Benneli, but was unsatisfied with the accuracy.  I could not get it to group consistently.  I finally traded it for a Browning Lightweight Stalker in .300 WM.  It is a great rifle, with great accuracy.  I wish I had gotten the Browning to begin with, but live 'n learn, as they say.  The Browning is very accurate.  I have only shot with 180gr. so I do not know how it would do with other bullet weights.  I do like the .300 cartridge, but it does burn up alot of powder each time you pull the trigger.

Cheers,
Gary

My dad and I got together yesterday afternoon and shot our BAR's. We shot at balloons that I stapled to trees at ranges from about 50 to 100 yards. The targets ranged in size from tennis ball to volley ball size. We went through 34 rounds of ammo and had a great time. I have a hard time getting my dad to shoot with me (he likes to hunt but isn't into shooting like I am), so yesterday we made memories that I'll carry with me for years. We both really like our BAR's, they're accurate, fun to shoot and reliable.

 Cheesehead, you wrote

What powder did you use in your BAR and how did you come to this conclusion?

Redhawk1, you wrote

Have you tried it out yet? I can't stand to have a new gun that hasn't been fired.

I used RL25 under 180 Ballistic tips. This locked the gas system and bolt up in the open position. I had to send the gun back to Browning for repair. The gas system is designed to work with faster powders. Also using anything but factory ammo voids the warranty.

Dang Cheese I hate to hear that.
How was your experience with Brownings customer service?
What powder and bullet weight did you go with after you got the gun back?
Since Redhawk already loaded up some ammo to test you might be able to keep him from getting into trouble like you did.
Did you use small base dies to load your ammo?

I've been loading Surplus Military Powder IMR-4895 with 150 and 125 grain bullets in our 30-06 BAR's and they shoot great and function flawlessly. This powder was designed for the M1-Garand so it's a natural in the 30-06 semi-auto. I also use an RCBS small base die set to load my ammo.

Well took the BAR out to the range today, I fired 40 rounds.

I got the gun sighted in for 2 inch high at 100 yards and my groups were very good. I am shooting 1 1/4 inch groups with the first load I loaded up.
I am using IMR4350 powder and 180 gr. Barnes TSX bullets. I don't think it was bad groups for as windy as it was today. I had swirling winds that kept changing direction.

I did not put a target at 200 yards, but I did shoot some clay targets at 200 yards. I held right on target and blew up each target with one shot. I am very pleased with the accuracy and function of the gun.  ;D

The BAR is a good gun. We bought my grandfather one in the 30/06 caliber last year. Blowing 5 rounds at the range it's possible to pull off 1 1/2" groups with the right round. I have several buddies who's bolt actions won't shoot that well.

Congrats on the new gun.
