Remington's 798
« on: September 18, 2007, 10:02:55 AM »
Have any of ya'll seen one of these yet? None of the gunstores around me(50 mile radius) have gotten any of them in. One guy told me it took him 3 months to get one of the MiniMausers for a customer, but had yet to see one of the full size rifles. The pictures I've seen of them on the website seem nice but it'd be bettter to fondle one.

I know some of ya'll don't consider these "Remingtons" as they're imports, but I want one to replace a 300WM Mark X that I had to sell.

I have only seen the pictures too. They look good in the picture, but like you said you need to put it in your hands to know if it is right for you.  The are supposed to be true Mauser actions, which some people swear that is the only kind to have. I read a post where a guy said that he had a Remington and was going to Africa with it. He had said he had fired it over 1000 times with out a single miss feed or jamb. Another guy advised him to get a Mauser action rifle any way, because you do not want it to jamb or drop one on the ground when you needed it the most. :o :o

They are from Zastava which is not at all bad...From what I understand, they are the same ones Charles Daly used to sell.

They're slightly heavier than your old Mark X, due to the laminated stock - but the handling/profile's about the same as the 1970-era Model 700's.

I saw and handled one at Gander Mtn.It was okay.  The laminated stock makes up into a nice looking piece of wood.  Although heavy, as posted.  The action was kinda clunky.  About like a Model 70.  Or a 98. I'm sure, like a model 70 or a 98, with enough elbow grease and lapping compound, it would slick up into a nice action.
Interestingly enough, I've shot well over 1000 rounds and never had a jam.  That's with action lengths from xmagnums (375) to .222.  And I've never dropped one on the ground.  I guess folks that do that sort of thing or fear that sort of thing need to spend more time familiarizing themselves with their armament and less time posturing in cyberspace.
