I vote for the 260 Remington. It has high quality VLD bullets available, low recoil, will stay above the sound barrier @ 1000 yds, long barrel life and is accurate in the correct rig. With just about any 1000 yd. gun you will have to think about a shimmed or sloped scope mount. You can buy rings with cam adjusters in them. Dial the front one to it's low spot and the rear one to it's high spot. There are some that have build 6mm Norma Benchrest rifles for this competition. The idea is to get a VLD bullet to 1000 yds with out dropping below the sound barrier. The 6mm Norma BR will just do that. At one time the 300 Winchester Magnum and 7 MM magnums dominated this competition. Now they are leaning towards a minimal approach. Your shoulder will thank you after a day of shooting a 260 or 6mm BR instead of a 300 Magnum. Less chance of developing a flinch. You do not need to kill anything at that range, just punch holes in paper as close together as possible. If you are planning on shooting elephants at 1000 yds then you will need a gun with more punch. Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the info La. The 260 has crossed my mind. I also have looked into those bases that have moe built into them. They are pretty expensive. I still have a lot of time before I start building or buying a 1,000 yard rifle. I really don't plan on anything till spring. I am just doing a lot of reading and getting ideas as to what I want to do.  Dale

I do a lot of thinking and planning, it does not cost a thing. You do a lot more of your thinking publicly than I. ;D That is OK, it gives us all something to talk about. I do as much thinking (dreaming) as you do, I just do not post it as much about it. :( I am basically a cheap skate, I want to do it as cheap as possible, but still get good results. It makes for interesting conversation. I would like to start a tread(discussion) about throat erosion, but I hesitate because there are a lot of mis-informed people out there and they would take every thing personally. Take care Dale and keep those thoughts coming ;D ;D ;D

Dale, 6mm dia. is becoming VERY popular among those who shoot at 1,00 yards due to new high BC bullets like the 115 DTAC & 105 Berger. 6mm Dashers & even 6mmbr will get there. You can get your 243 bedded & shoot 105 A-Max or 105 Bergers. You may or may not stabilize the 115DTac, if not you can Ackley Improve your gun & then the small edge will give you stability with the 115. If you get your stock set up properly you can get a 260 tube anytime.

Look here to see what you can do with a 243/243AI       http://www.6mmbr.com/243Win.html

I am a little stupid to these type of things. That is why I am always asking questions and thinking out loud. Do you mean I could buy a 260 barrel and have it installed on my rifle with little to no modifactions? Dale.

Yes, it is same bolt head, just buy the barrel & have a gunsmith install/headspace. So, I would say that you need to shoot a bunch & wear out that tube. You can install any of the 308 based rounds 260/7-08/308, whatever. Also you could use a 22-250 with a 1-8 OR 1-9  & many others with the same boltface. Just set up your Rem as a platform & then install a barrel whenever.

I just got off the phone with Remington. I could send my rifle into them and have them fit it with a 26''   260  Varmint barrel. The barrel would cost $218.00 and then their fitting fee. For under $300.00 I would have a rifle much more suited for my needs. The ballistics on the 260 really shine and I would have a rifle I could hunt varmints and deer well with. For groundhogs it could be loaded with 85 grain bullets. They also make bullets of 140 grain and 160 grain for deer. I really think this would be the best of both worlds. It still has over 1,000 pounds of energy out to 500 yards. The high BC of the bullets also make it a very good round for punching holes in paper out to 1,000 yards. What do you guy's think have I found my Holy Grail.   Dale

If your going to build a 1000 yard rig, Build one, if you want a Hunting gun that will also work to 1000, you already have one.

A 1000 yard gun is going to need a heavy barrel, a Stiff stock that rides the bags Very well, and is bedded, a trigger that breaks at a few Ounces, a 15 - 20 MOA Base, and Quality Optics. You will not see a Mueler on many Long Range guns...

If you want to shoot WELL at 1000 Yards, Add in timing and trueing the action, LOTS of work reloading to get "THE" Load LOTS of range time, with a Great log book of every shot. It goes from Fun to Work real Fast...

Your .243 will get you to 1000 with a Good Scope and a 15 or 20 MOA Base, your factory stock etc, you will be able to ring the gongs.  at 500 - 600 yards you can do Very well with it  ;D

Ace, dead on in my view!!

This is why I suggested to 1. Set it up as a platform, which means bedding the stock, truing up receiver & such & 2. Wear out that barrel. As you said, the 243 will get you there & really good at 600 or so. Before you wear out the 243 tube you will know whether you want to go whole hog with a target stock in time to get the barrel or just go with this bedded stock. You will know whether as Ace said to go for broke, or to have a great Varmit rifle that you can have some fun with at 1,000 yards. In the meanwhile you can get good bullets tat will take care of Deer very well out to 4-500 with the 243.
One other thing, if you opt for the first class 1,000 yard gun, I would spend another $150-200 for a better grade barrel.

Dale - if you want a do all gun, I think that the 260 would be great. Like ACE said if you really want to be a world champion in 1000 yard contests, then you need to build a 1000 yard gun. I also think you will have to hand load. I think the 260 would let you compete in local shoots, give you a long distance chuck gun and put down deer with more authority than your 243. I also think the 260 would be a little better on barrels than the 243. The article that was talked about on 6mmBR.com said that you can get around 1500 shots out of a 243. I think you could do better with a 260 (less over bore). Another option would be use the 243 in all of the above until the throat erosion starts getting bad, then re-barrel. I believe there is better selection in factory 243 than 260. If you go the 260 route, I think you should seriously consider hand loading, even if it is a Lee Reloading Kit. You can get a Kit and a few other essential tools for well under $100. The Lee Reloading Kit is slow, but turns out quality ammo.

La I do know I really need to get into reloading. I need to do this for two reasons. The main reason is that factory ammo is not up to par as to what I want and expect. With reloads I can fine tune loads to a pitcular barrel. The second reason is it will cost me a lot less money. The more I look at the 260 it is a caliber that would fit most of my needs. This may not still be the Ideal 1,000 yard rifle but I feel I could do a lot more with it than I can with my 243.       Dale

instead why not have you 243 barrel cut to a ackley improved 243  mite be a easier cheaper way to get more out of your rifle .. just a thought

The more I think about it. I think I will leave my 243 alone and save my pennies and get a 260. Dale

Now you are a talkin'; more guns is better ;D ;D ;D ;D

Really Dale - your 243 is sweet, it would be very hard for me to intentionally break up as good of a rifle as that. It will do what you want. 1000 yard club shoots, chuck hunting, and deer. IF you ever get to the point of too much throat erosion, you can re chamber in 6mm-284 or you could rebarrel in a number of different chambers that have the 30-06 head size. To shoot in 1000 yard matches you will have to compensate for that much bullet drop with a different mount or rings. I do not think any scope made can crank that much drop in. If you limit yourself to 600 yard shoots you will not have near the bullet drop and I think your scope could dial in enough drop to compensate for it. Since it is the mil dot variety you may be able to zero in at 300 - 400 and use the mil dots to shoot at 600 yards.
