A good friend gave me an old one.  It fires, but the extractor claw is broke and the ejector plunger is stuck in the bolt face.  The outside was rough, but a few minutes with CLP and 0000 steel wool fixed that.  The stock was pretty rough, not dings or dents, just has the finish worn and cracked.  Lots of buildup around the grip area.  The great news is the bore proved to be bright and shiny after a few passes of the nylon brush and followed by a patch.

For now i don't plan to put a scope on it.  I, perhaps wrongly, assume it would have to be drilled and tapped to have a scope on it???

Anyhoo, I just had to share the good news with some folks that would appreciate it.  I'll put it on paper Friday.  See how she does.  I'll post results Monday.

I shot my first rabbit and squirrel with a Rem 514 when I was 8 years old.  It brings back memories.  I remember replacing the extractor a few years later.  I got the part from Remington and I think it was stamped metal. Since it uses a coil spring for tension, the extractor does not have to be spring steel.  If you can't find an extractor it should be pretty easy to make one.   After years of use, I noticed if the trigger is pulled with the safety on and then the safety taken off, the trigger pull is very light.... like a set trigger.  The long barrel and light trigger makes for a very accurate rifle.  Good luck you your new acquisition.
