I have used a red dot sight on a 44 with heavy loads and a leupold scope on a 454, neither gave problems.. they both made it easier for sighting... the scope would blank out if I was not carefully aligned trying to find moving game, though, and the red dot took a little time to learn to use properly, as the reticle brightness can cause a problem in poor light if it is too bright.. but once I learned to use it, it was great... sold it with the gun...
the folks with Holosights tell me they are very durable and accuarate for 100 yards easily.. I would love to have one on my contender barrel or my lever gun... if the soldiers cannot break it you probably will not either... I understand that if you can still see through it it is good to go, so even works damaged...
both eyes open and glasses on would defintiely help some, and would be easier on any eyes than Iron sights... less to align etc.
let us know..
it would be great to try a bunch of them for your self wouldn't it...?  I stopped using my express sight and went back to a square notch, in good light it shot great... do not know about darker evenings, etc. I  will report back

Thank you all for your replies on the holosight.  I think I probably will be going that way because I have been a bushnell fan for years.  I just didn't feel comfortable with the warrenty and bushnell did not want to commit themselves on the phone.  I do not shoot many full house loads, primarily cast boolits, but some times I like to shoot jacketed rounds.  I like the cast boolits for whitetails, kills quickly, no damage to the meat.  I would really like to hunt hogs, have never done it, sounds like fun.  I have hunted and killed black bear, moose, and whitetails, but never hogs, as I live in northeast Maine.   ;D ;D

I bit the bullet several years ago and went to a red dot.  Best thing I ever did.   Good luck...Van

Does your red dot seem to blurr or get all out of shape when the reostat is turned too high? Seems the lower I can set it{with in reason for conditions} the better I can see the dot? I really like my Ultra for first and last light of the day, thinking of going back to the truck for my Mountain Gun (no red dot scope gun), and switching guns,  for the middle of the day, light, this year?

Warren, IMO you need a Dot type sight. You want small and light weight so there's no free lunch on this one. A  Trijicon Doctor, JP Enterprises, or Pride Fowler dot sight will do what you want. Yup, they're expensive but are small and light. I've got a Trijicon Reflex sight on my S&W .44 mag and I love it but it's not small compared to the other sights I mentioned. They weren't available when I bought my reflex sight. A 4 MOA or smaller dot is best for me.

Update;
I bought the "One Ragged Hole" sight and it has given new life to my handgun hunting.
The original rear open sight had a square notch to line up the front sight. Well my eyes could not focus on the rear sight and the notch became blurred. The One Ragged Hole sight opens up the rear sight area allowing the front sight to be seen easier.
For a small price I can now confidently use my pistol this season.
Thanks all for your help.

Warren

The Bushnell Holosight on my .44 mag Anaconda was just the ticket for my 64 year old eyes.

oake , I just installed my ORH sight on my Super Redhawk , also put on  Marbles green fiber optic up front.  I do like the set-up.  I'm using the larger blade , think I'll try the smaller blade , as my groups really open up at 50 yards.  At 25 yards , I literally did shoot one ragged hole. ( 454 at that ), at 50 I was shooting 6-8 inch groups , I'd like to get that down to the 3 inch range.  You can purchase the ORH at their web site , don't remember the exact address , just Google " one ragged hole " and it will give you the site.  The sight was 24.95 plus shipping....that will get you 2 rear apartures and excellant instructions on installation, which is a piece of cake......I ordered the fiber optic front from Midway , believe it was 17.or 18 bucks plus shipping.....honestly the front sight really made a big difference , maybe more so than the rear.  Good Luck

oake : www.oneraggedhole.com  will get you there, I am pretty sure... I am considering it for these old eyes.. everything is fuzzy .. and for shooting fuzzy is bad...
the red dots and the other optics are really good and easy... the scopes are a challenge somewhat... the reflex type sights are really easy and fast... but for the price and size I am gonna try new glasses and then a ORHole sight and see what it does for me..
I also am looking at the williams peep but not sure if it will mount easily on the gun; I would add the merit adjustable insert to the williams, is the only reason I would consider it over the One ragged hole.. I got a bit confused when trying to see if it would fit or could be fitted... kind of looked like it could not be... I would love to have the adjustable opening if I had a Peep sight... had one on a thirty thirty and it was great with a white front site.. fast and accurate for open sights.... convinced me the peeps are great sights.

kennisondan. does Williams make a sight for pistols???  I use one of these on rifles but never heard of mounting one on a pistol? I know the  Merrit apenture works well on a rifle but, I don't know about it being that far away from the eye?

I do not think a williams sight is made for the pistols... the different contours and receiver mounts made me think it could possibly be done... I was looking into it in order to try to get to use the Merit adjustable on it... better for the different conditions in the field.
gonna need to see more of the models and see if the ones that mount on a flat surface could go on the rear of a revolver.  Even a little macinin of the sight base would be acceptable to me to try different aperature sizes..
