Does anyone have any thoughts on the 240 wby. I really have no use for one but i sure do want one. I know that ammo is expensive etc, but I am still pulled toward it. I live in the deep south, so I will not be shooting Pd's but we do have a lot of coyotes and hogs. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I have a 6mm-06 which is ballistically the same thing. Mine is a single shot with a long (29-inch) barrel. It shoots 70-grain Nosler Balistic tips at 3,900 fps plus. It seems to shoot even flatter than my ballistics program predicts. I think it would be difficult to find a better coyote rifle as long as saving the furs isn't important. My barrel has a slow twist so I am unable to shoot good deer bullets. However, I have shot a few with the 70-grain varmint bullets. It kills them, but sometimes they run 50 or 100 yards before going down. I have read at least three magazine articles where the authors said that the .240 Weatherby and 6mm-06 kill deer noticibly better than the .243 Winchester and 6mm Remington. Maybe an extra 300 feet per second is real important on a small caliber gun. I think I would use premium bullets on hogs as I have read they are tough. I've only shot two and that was with a 7MM STW. Another thing is that recoil is light if that's a consideration. I would recommend as long a barrel as is available to get the most from the relatively large powder capacity.

If you're going to buy a Weatherby, get the 257. I have had a little experience with the 240; it's really not much better than the 243. The reloads that gave me the best accuracy were moving at near 243 speeds, the max loads all seemed to open up the groups. The 257 can use heavier bullets, but you can choose to use 100 grain and have no more recoil than a 240.

240's are fun to shoot but IMO rather impractical. A 6 mm is a worthwhile improvement over a 243 and will give you decent barrel life when compared to a 240 if you are going with a 6 mm size. I would argue for a 25:06 over the 240 Whby. if you want more zip with inexpensive components. The under 30 cal Weatherby's are tough on barrels as you are putting alot of powder through them and brass is expensive.

Thanks for the responses guys. I already have a 257 wby that I love so I agree, that is more practical. I also agree that the 240 is impractical, but you know how it is, when you get your mind set on something. I think that for right now, I will wait. We are about to start our archery season and I really do not have time to sight in a new gun nor work up a load, but maybe next year. I also have a 25/06 so I really do not need this gun, so maybe I will get my mind set on something by then. Thanks again all.
