Accessory Barrel Date/Serial Question

I was reading in the FAQ's "You're looking for a P or later if you want to be able to order barrels marked with  * an asterisk on the accessory barrel page."

Does this mean the origional serial is an NEF-N 1953 production or NEF-NN, 1999?
Sorry for the stupid question.
The more I look and read about the Handi's on this site, the more I know I'll have a new throat to feed soon and more to come. I want to make sure that if I buy a used one, I'll be able to get a second tube for it. -g

For a two letter prefix, the first N = NEF, if the first letter is an H = H&R, the second letter denotes the year of mfr. NN or HN would be 1999, NP or HP would be 2000, there's no O. The single letter prefixes were for the original H&R which went out of business in 1986, there was no NEF then. The two letter prefix started in 1986,  HA would be 1986, just A = 1940, I don't think there was any NEF until later on, 1990 or so.

Thanks Quick. So if I'm understanding the information in the FAQ's, an action with a serial starting with HN (H&R - 1953 production) and later can be sent in for a fresh extra barrel? Or does the original need to be made at NEF for them to sell and fit you a new barrel. Sorry for being so thick on this, I just want to be sure before getting in to deep and not be able to upgrade a few. I have a friend that my want to part with what he saying is an older 45/70  he got on the Res in Oklahoma as a kid that was handed down. What a find to start this new addiction.

No...  A single letter prefix N would mean it was made in 1953, frames that are of current H&R production have two letters preceding the numbers,  if you read the instructions on the accessory barrel page, it says the frame must have been made since 1987(NB or HB),  anything made since 1986 has a 2 letter prefix, the first being N(NEF) or H(H&R), the second letter is the letter that denotes year of mfr as far as barrel fitting is concerned, as in HN123456. The old H&R production only had one letter in the serial number as shown in the FAQs, as in N123456.

Further more, H&R won't fit and of the asterisk * marked barrels to frames made before 19992000, those would be HP or NP.

I searched, and found exactly what I was looking for! Thanks. (1990, 2006). I'm trying to buy a .243 barrel in the classifieds, it looks like it will work great on one of my frames.
