American Pioneer Powder

I am curious if anyone has used this powder in their caplocks, and if so what kind of performance have you got from it.  I want to try it in my .50 Deerstalker (.490 round balls, .018 Ox yoke patches) and am curious if any others have given it a try.  I like the low residue characteristics (I know your not supposed to use any oils or lubes, even on the patches) as cleaning is the one thing I detest HIGLY  ;).

I love the stuff, it works great for me. No lube or you'll have a mess to clean up. I use a spit patch for the first shot and then I can shoot all day with dry patches. I swab the bore with alcohol before the first shot - did I mention no lube!!

Hey jgalar,

Do you use No 11 or Musket caps? (assuming its not a flinter your shooting)  I saw only one little blurb while Googling the stuff where a guy mentioned he got a few hangfires from No 11's but not Muskets.  Other than that no mention of any other ignition issues using anything other than 209 shotgun primers (which does me no good ;) )

And reading the FAQ section of their site, plus yours and other numerous posts, I know lube is evil  :D.

I only use 10s or 11s in anything I shoot - no 209s or musket caps.

Mine is just one opinion though. You may want to do a search as this topic has come up before and others didn't care for the powder.

How do you not burn through your patch if you don't lube it or wet it?

Apparently one of the byproducts of the powder burn is moisture, so in effect it is "self lubing".  The FAQ on their site also states you can spit patch subsequent patches, but that it is unnecessary since the barrel will be moist enough that (as they claim) "Loading will actually be easier than when using lubes. Also, our product produces only a very minimal amount of residue which does not build up. If lubes are allowed to come in contact with the powder, it can actually create fouling and lower performance when burned."

I think I will run down to the nearest local dealer and give some a try.  At the very least I still have plenty of Goex for deer season.

american pioneer powder is by far the worst powder I have ever had the mis-fortune to try.  The charcoal element is made from an "orange peel" refuse,,and it is by far the most hygroscopic of all the faux black powders available.
 If you just want to just go "boom-boom" at the gun range a few times it's fun,,but if you use less than 1 pound of powder per season? forget it.and if you plan to use that same pound of powder next season,,good luck.,,
,,trust me, I tried the stuff when it was called "clean-shot"!, that was before they got  sued out of business.

Ummm...I work for a fiberglass aquaculture filter manufacturing plant in Manchester NH.  If you had read the whole post you would note I said this quote came from their FAQ section on their website.  I don't work for them, KNOW anyone who works for them....hell, I doubt there even from this state I live in.  You asked a question, I tried to answer using information from there website.....pardon me  ::) .

Tried it (FFFg) and found it to be too inconsistent. Switched to 777 (FFg), inconsistency problem solved. With all the claims they make, I should have known it was too good to be true.

See B. Miville, I told you there would be other opinions. :) Just have to try the stuff yourself and not worry about other's opinions.

I used to be a card carrying member of Nashua Fish and Game. I miss NH, except for shoveling snow and raking leaves.

I apologize too....I should not have gotten so cross.

Anyways, this is what I make here:

Basically they are filters for aquariums, fish/shrimp farming, etc. 

As for the Powder.........I checked for a dealer.  Nothing conveniently close by, so I will hold off for now until I have more time for a longer drive (that does not invovle me dressing in camo and grabbing a gun or bow at the end of  ;D ).  I will probably play around with the stuff next spring.

If only the darn powder resevoirs on these frontstuffers were easier to clean!!!!!!!!!!

I have used American Pioneer Powder for years, since it was called Cleanshot, & always had good results. No fouling, easy cleanup, good accuracy, ignites better than Pyrodex. I haven't had any bad experiences with the loose powder. Some people have complained that it can clump together if not used quickly, I have had some containers last more than a year and never experienced clumping. I store my powder in a basement with a dehumidifer. The only problem I ever experienced was with the early Cleanshot Pellts. They were hard to ignite. I have not tried their new "sticks".

i use it and like it alot but have not used anything else yet cost around me at least is comparable with all the other powders would like to try 777 but keeping hearing about this crud ring and am also not a big fan of cleaning afterwards so that is a plus with the app only thing is i have an inline and it breaks open so is easy to clean and have not tried bp cause no one around me sells it.
