Custom wood grips...
« on: September 21, 2007, 01:48:36 PM »
Hey gang...just ordered my first Encore today...been looking at them for a couple years now and just never got around to getting me one...was looking at a couple of the different grip designs and as I have smaller hands don't want something massive to hold on to...was looking at this style grip...anyone had any experience with this guy or any of his products...will be getting a .44 Mag and a .500 S&W barrel (with JP Recoil Eliminator) so its gonna have a little thump to it...

Here's the link to it..

Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors, and welcome to the wonderful world of TC.  I hope you have as much fun with your Encore as I have with my Contenders.  Be very careful because they are habit forming!

I can't help you with the grip, but if you go out to the main forum page for each individual forum and look at the top you will see the search feature.  I think it is turned back on, but I haven't used it for a while.  Let us know how it works for you.

Come back often.  This is a darned good place to hang out and talk TC.

I looked at the Georgia Jims...I guess from all the years shooting a 1911 with a beaver tail I really like the feel of a grip that mimics that beaver tail feel...found a couple others...just to much pretty wood out there to choose...

Hi I have a ? for you I was at a auction yesterday and picked up a T/C contender ;)  I have always wanted one but never took the plunge so I'm new with the contenders. I could use any information you can give me.I ask you because you posted a pic. of a gun with the same frame. It has a cougar on it.The barrel is a .41mag. super 14. I also picked up a .223 super 14 barrel with a muzzle brake on it.Is there something special with this gun or did they put the cougar on all frames at one time? Any other information you might have would be greatly appreciated!!! Some pic.s to follow here I hope.  Thanks

Here's another one for you to consider.  Mr. Roberts does real good work and my Contenders and Encores all wear the recoil tamer.  He was also able to custom fitted to my hand.

Use the Google Search on left at top of each page below all the ads. For now that's it. When the new servers go into use (assuming they survived the fire at Matt's house yesterday) then we'll have the forum search feature back in operation.

Sniper,

For a number of years all the Contender frames had the cougar on the side. I'm afraid you'll need a better expert than me to give you the dates. Mine was made in '79, and it has the cougar on the sides. Great guns, enjoy!

Sniper,

Under the Thompson Center Handguns forum there is a post entitled, "Contender Manufacture Dates".  I think you'll find what you need there.

Sniper,

There were several vintages of Contender frames made between 1967 and TC unceremoniously dropping the model with the new millennium.    Some of the easily noticeable differences in the "original" frame types were various firing pin selection systems, a change in the barrel pin location and in the breech block design.   While there were some "flat side" frames made, all of the original production frames had a cougar on them.   Up until 1996/97 it was basically a deep relief full body cougar and after that an etched cougar head only.   The easy open frames started in late 1981 and continued until the demise of the original model.   Stainless frames date from 1993, were all easy open, and all had the etched cougar head.   In 1998 TC changed to a new breech face idea with mixed results.   The concept of a replaceable wear block may have been good, but the first frames incorporating it were problematic.   Some needed to be sent back to TC for rewelding.   The demise of the Contender soon after put an end to TC ever getting the bugs worked out.

Can't help you with the G2's, sorry.   Tim P. sneaked the prototype out from under the table for me to play with discreetly at the 2000 SHOT show, and I knew right then I would never own one (and told him so).
