210 grain for the .357 handi
« on: September 22, 2007, 10:06:42 AM »
Got the Lyman mold - it casts 210 grains with my WW mix, checked and lubed. Loaded to to the crimp groove with an OAL of 1.832 it chambers fine in the new Handi .357 barrel. Just to be sure, I tried it in several .357 revolvers - it will chamber, but sticks out the front of the cylinder about 3/8 of an inch- so there is no chance of being used in a revolver. Because it seats so far out, there is actually more powder space in the case than with a 158 grain bullet. Anyway, loaded up a few to test with the Lyman manual TC contender section using Alliant 2400. Will try to post photo. In the lower right, there is a comparison with a 158 grain round nose flat point.
Thanks,
Dan

Nice, post up how they work for ya!!

I did some experimenting with very heavy for caliber bullets. After reading an article about quiet loads. Neat, idea. Heavy bullets carry more energy even when fired a very low velocities.

An old friend gave me a Lyman mold that casts the same bullet you are using, except at 245 grains weight. So far it has given excellent results in my .357 Max Handi. The long bullet nose takes up some of that excess chamber throat (even after reaming out for .357 Max, the throat is still too long!) Reloder 7 works well in the Max. I had good results with Hodgdon 'Lil Gun when the rifle was still a .357 Mag. It's worth a try -- meters very smoothly and consistently.

I will post again when I have a chance to try them out. I am going to order some DW ,360 case and experiment with those a bit before I ream it to a max chamber. Little gun was one of the powders I am planning to test.
Thanks for the replies,
Dan

darkroomdan it looks like you are going down the same path that I am going to try when my bbl gets here . Have you cast your chamber to see what it measures? I am also gonna try the DW360 and maybe try and trim down some max brass before I ream to max keep us posted as you go forward thanks Kurt

I have the Lyman 214 gr. SWC #358627 mould and like this idea, I'd like to hear how some of you are doing with this project. I'd like to get a .357 Handi but first I have to move my .243 Ultra, I have more use for the .358 cal. bullets. Great idea, the .300 Whisper has always interested me and this fits the same line of thinking.
