left hand needed???
« on: September 23, 2007, 03:39:52 AM »
Considering a Lyman Trade Rifle in percussion.  They offer a left hand model.  Is it really needed for a lefty.
I wonder that if it ever comes a time to sell it, will a left hand version be hard to get rid of?

Thanks

I know a lot of left handed shooters who shoot right handed guns  with little problem .

Now the + for a left handed shooter shooting a left handed gun  is that the lock is on the off side . Thus any splatter from the cap or  flash from a pan is on the other side of the gun away from ones face . With custom rifles  that are often built with cast  the stock is shaped differently for a left hand shooter vs. a right hand shooter .

Now with the Lyman  trade rifle , if it has a cheek plate , that plate will be on the  wrong side for a right handed shooter .

As to difficulty in later selling the rifle ? That depends on if there is a left handed shooter looking for one .
There is a smaller % of left handed people in the world so the market for specific items built for them is smaller .  Then when you consider that within that group is a given number of folks who  shoot right handed while being left handed , suddenly your market group gets even smaller

Percussion are not bad at all shooting a right handed rifle left handed. I own a right handed new englander and dont notice much. Now a flint is a different story, I would not recommend shooting a right handed flint left handed. There a choices out there for the left handers, mostly lymans, also TVM makes most of their rifles for lr\eft handers as well.

I have a Lyman Trade rifle in .54 and think it's great. I say go for it, and why not get the correct one for you. There are a lot of Lefty's out there if you should decide to sell it, but one you use it I doubt you will ever let it go.

There were double barrel shotguns built in both percussion and flint versions, so yes, you can shoot either way....

A rifle is built with a 1/4 inch cast off (butt plate is 1/4 inch off the center of the barrel0, to make it easier to get your cheek down to see the sights and also reduce the felt recoil to the face...

I never buy a gun planning to get rid of it, buy a .54, you'll keep it...

proper amount of cast off is dictated buy measurements of the shooter .
some of you may already have seen this but  here is  the SXS i just finished  and purposely put in  6 deg . this SXS  i built for me , not often i get to do that now days  but i added the greater cast so as to compensate for my line of sight combine with length of pull and neck length. This way when I pull the  gun it lines up perfectly without having to settle into it ..
I find shooting with the lock on  the shooter side IE the lefts side isn’t a problem , its all mental really .

Gunbuster,
I am a lefty, and have a left handed Renegade. I also have other left handed centerfire rifles as well. As was mentioned above I don't typically buy guns with plans to sell them. So I buy the type and style of gun I want. I have always been of the mind that you need to buy what fits you best. If you're comfortable shooting a right handed gun, then do so. As far as the resale value or difficulty of reselling. I have not had any problem selling the few that I have gotten rid of.

Jim
Ohhh, so many guns and so little time to buy them.  :)

thanks jim .
my point however is that IF a rifle isnt purposely built for a left handed person .  Purpose being proper cast  off , shape  as in check plats and such . Then what side the lock is on is purely a mental issue .
While its true that with a flintlock its a little un-nerving the first couple times  , once you realize nothings going to really happen to you , you use it like a normal gun .

Some folks just never like the idea of the ignition being on the same side as the shooter , that’s natural , things get in the way , shooting stances have to be adjusted and such .

As someone above said  and I think its very sound advice . Buy what  fits you .  If your thinking ahhhhh if I don’t like it I can always sell it ? The maybe your unsure about your reasons for purchasing it in the first place .
