S & W 629-DX 8 3/8" 44 Mag. using a R-P 240 gr JHP bullet over a max load of H-110.  Stops em every time if you do your part.

Before I switched over to the T/C Contender I hunted for several years with a S/W 629. Open sights, a 6" barrel and a stout load of 296 topped off with a .240 gr. XTP bullet took care of many deer. I never had to pull the trigger twice with that pistol. It was certainly a sweet shooter.

Ok, now I am really confused.   I am reading that many of you hunt with  41/2" or a little more revolvers.  I thought the minimum you needed was a 7 1/2".  I can pick up a Redhawk 4.5" at a good price used but I was going to go for the Super Blackhawk hunter in 7.5" because I thought you had to have the extra length and scope.  With the Redhawk work?  I can save a $150 if I go that way.

It is entirely up to your tastes and abilities.  I used to only carry 4 inch revolvers, but as my eyesight as aged, I have switched to a 7 1/2 inch bbl for my stand hunting gun.  When I'm out checking spots during deer season, I carry a 6 inch open sighted revolver.  When I'm out on the trap line or snowshoeing, I still carry a 4 inch bbl (Mnt Gun).

But for the critical accuracy at 50 yards, (from my stand) I use a scoped revolver.

Like I said...it is up to your skill and eyesight ability.  Elmer had killed many deer with a 4 inch revolver as have many other well known shooter.

It also has to do with what your local game laws are, out here in Washington state we can use a 4" gun but in other states it must be longer check there first.

I liked 5-5.5 for a long time but the eye thing has caused me to get a 7.5

ah shucks guys,i love em all and for michigan it don't matter whcih one i grab they all will do the job.
appreciate this choice is closer than the bush-gore election.

1.blackhawk 41mag with 210 xtp
 2. super redhawk 44 mag 240xtp
 3.smith 29-3 - 240xtp
 4 gp100 170 gr lswc
 
now appreciate this is a photo finish,with no more than a nosehair difference. dan
