Pistol barrels...encore vs. pro hunter
« on: September 24, 2007, 09:09:50 AM »
Any advantage to getting the pro hunter barrel over the standard encore barrel in a pistol configuration? Correct me if I'm wrong...

same contour...
Encore is drilled and tapped with adjustable sights...
Pro Hunter is fluted, drilled and tapped with no sights...

So other than sight options and a couple flutes I don't see any major differences between the two...I guess if you wanted open sights later on though the encore would give you that option but you would have to leave the front sight blade on while scoped or leave a hole in the barrel when you take it off...

Would I be better off to spend the extra cash and get a custom barrel from MGM?

Never mind...I went ahead and placed my order...got me a 375 JDJ 15" Stainless Encore and a 7mm-08 15" Stainless Encore...both were on clearance so that makes it ok right?

Anyone had good luck with getting a red dot scope to hold up under a 375 JDJ...thinking it might be my 100 yard and under gun so the red dot would be perfect (Bushnell Trophy 1x28)...and thinking a Bushnell 3200 in 2x6 for the 7mm-08...

I started with a 2X Leupold on my .375 JDJ, and after about 2 years, switched it to a 4X Leupold 16 years ago. I'd recommend one or the other ( preferrably 4X) over any red dot, for that caliber because the round has at least 200 yard potential in trained hands. I've carried mine hunting on four continents, to my complete satisfaction.
I've got eight Bushnell 3200's in service on various guns, including an XP in 7mm-08, and would highly recommend it. If you want simplicity and ready familiarity between the two barrels, the 3200 will also work well on the .375 JDJ.

Instead of a new thread I will post up here...both my barrels came in today...and the ammo...OMG...that 375 JDJ is one helluva round for a handgun...I set it next to a 30-06 for comparison and I broke a sweat just thinking about shooting it...my frame comes in tomorrow but I am going fishing for the weekend so it will be a week or so before I get to ring her out...
