Recipe for 140 Grain Nosler Partition in 7-08
« on: September 24, 2007, 11:14:07 AM »
Hey guys, does anyone have a recipe for 140 grain Nosler Partition slugs using H4350?  I did check with Nosler, they only use IMR 4350 in their manuals. It seems to me that using a max of 48 grains should be safe, especially when the COL in my Rem. 700 is 2.8 inches.
Any help/info using H4350 will be appreciated, specifically because this powder works well in cold weather in a 7-08. A 48 grain max load worked very well in another 7-08 I had with 145 grain Grand Slams.

I've never used any H4350 in any of my 7-08's (I'm an addict of the cartridge) but you have a couple of things going for you. H4350 is slightly slower than IMR4350 so a load that is safe with IMR4350 would certainly be safe with the Hodgdon brand, and too, if the load is safe with a 145gr bullet, it should work with a 140gr bullet.
I prefer H4895 in my 7-08's but I have used both the 140gr NP and the 145gr GS.  Both excellent bullets.  And for what it's worth, I used the same powder charge for both.  My bullet selection was based on which one that particular rifle shot best.

According to Hodgdons data: bullet is a 140 grain SFT SP (no specific brand) with H4350. Min charge is 45.0 @ 42300 CUP and a velocity of 2692 fps. Max charge is 48.0 @ 49800 CUP and a velocity of 2868 fps. The 48.0 grain load is a compressed charge. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guy's appreciate it ;D  It's my thinking as well that I should be on the safe side, especially with the max COL not being a problem with my rifle. I've copied some of the Hodgdon info as well, but I don't mind checking in with other users.

140 grain SFT SP
With Hodgdon data "SFT" indicates Swift A-Frame.

I do NOT understand that comment. There is not one single cartridge or bullet that Nolser uses ONLY one powder for in their manuals. In fact there is almost always at least six to eight powders used with every bullet in every chambering.

I think he means that among the various powder loads for that bullet they list IMR4350 but not H4350.

I don't know where the info that H4350 works better in cold weather than IMR4350 comes from tho.  The other day a fellow posted that having the bullet touch the lands reduced throat erosion.  ???

Nosler advised they do not have a loading for the 140 grain Partition using H4350. Why H4350, well it works really well at -35F and has been accurate in another 7-08 I had some time ago. The powder is one of their Extreme line of products and is not so sensitive to temp.  Again, thanks for the input Guys.
