Ruger Super Redhawk cal 454
« on: September 25, 2007, 04:38:18 AM »
I have just ordered a Ruger Super Redhawk in cal 454 with an 91/2"barrel. It will be used for long range shooting and hopefully hunting.(I have to get back to Africa some day) Which bulletweigt and design should I choose for both hunting and longrangeshooting?
I cast my own bullets, so I need tip for a good mould.
So far I have used a Smith 29 with 83/8" barrel and a LEE 310gr FT, but i dont want to punish my Smith anymore with this heavy load.

a couple good ones for the 454 are the 300 rcbs swcgc. the balistic cast 320 lfngc and the ballistic cast 350 lfngc. Im sure veral makes some good comparable bullets in his molds but i havent tried them in the 45s I know his heavy lfns in 44 work well.

I'm personally quite fond of the Lyman 452651 a GC bullet that drops about 325 grains give or take a few grains depending on alloy. From pure linotype it drops 318 from my two moulds. It has a wide meplat and two crimp grooves and has proven extremely accurate for me in both revolvers I've tried it from. I also like the LBT designs in 320-330 grain weights. I personally push them to about 1550 fps only and they've worked well and shot accurately.

Thanks, I think I will try the Lyman 452651, these molds are "reasonable" priced her in Norway ::)
And perhaps a six cavity Lee bullet mould for practice.
