1858 Remington New Army revolver
« on: September 25, 2007, 12:22:11 PM »
Maybe someone here can help me out with a question. I have a Richland Arms replica 1858 New Army with a broken hand spring. Went to Numerich's online site, and they do not have parts for a Richland revolver. However, they do have the part for a Aldo Uberti replica. I am guessing that the part will fit, but might need a bit of final fitting. Anyone know if this is the case? Thanks for any info.

A few years ago I bought a 1858 replica made by (for) Lyman that was nearly perfect except the hand spring was rusted through.  I bought the only one I could find, a CVA, and had to file it down a little to get it to fit.  For replicas they are all a little different, but close enough (at least in my case) to work.

My handspring was rusted through even tho it was in grease.  From that time on I always completely disassembled after shooting any of the cap and ball revolvers and gave them a good cleaning.  That little hand spring was the smallest part and the first to rust out.

Thanks Keith.  That's pretty much what I thought, but it's good to have a little reassurance.  The spring in mine didn't rust, but broke.  I made a replacement from a thin piece of spring steel, but it's not strong enough, and I have to manually index the cylinder.  Think I will go ahead and order the Uberti spring.

I have the same Lyman Remington New Army you mentioned and when I got it the hand spring was completely missing. It looks practically unfired except for the missing part. Kind of a wall hanger now.

Get a handspring where ever you can find one and make it a shooter.  The lockup on mine is as good as my Uberti replicas, and it is a sweet shooter.  I have several New Armies and really like them, but I like the Lyman the best.
