Was at the grocery store this evening and saw that the latest issue of  HANDLOADER

had an article on the 357 maximum if any one is interested in picking it up.

I wouldn't buy it just for that article, it's mainly the development and its demise, not data. But that Oct #249 issue does have good articles on the Lee Classic Turret Press, Barnes Varmint Grenade bullets and Expander Ball Myths by Barsness. ;)

I have a subscription for the on line Mag. I down load it in .pdf format. I also get two others from Wolfe Publishing and 1 year is $20 for all three. Not too bad. :)

Same here, but this is the first time I've subscribed that way, I prefer to have the hard copy, so I won't be renewing.

Here's the link if anyone is interested in the online version, each magazine is about 13-15Mb, so broadband internet is almost a necessity.

You blew it big time IMO, you could easily sell it here for 3 times that and make both you and the buyer happy! 357Mag barrels are selling like hotcakes at H&R with most of those bought here to be rechambered to Max.   38spl, 357mag and 357max ammo can be shot in it, Max ammo is available as well as reloading components and dies.

I shot IHMSA production class with a .357 Maximum in a 10" TC Contender for a few years,.. almost all of it with cast bullets.

I had a chronograph back then and was very surprised with the velocity that I could get with the cartridge.

Most of my shooting was done with the RCBS 35-200FN bullet made from straight quench cast wheel weights. I got very good accuracy with H4227 at about 1550 with that bullet (which weighed about 220 grains cast from wheel weights) and on a few occasions, I took that 220 grain bullet close to 1700 fps with WW680 back when it was still available,.. and bear in mind,.. that was from a 10" barrel. The primers showed no sign of excessive flattening and the cases would slip right out of the chamber after firing. In other words,.. there was no sign of excess pressure at that velocity with the WW680.

It seems that most people chose bullets intended for the .357 Magnum when they load for the Maximum,... but it really shines with the heavier bullets intended for the .35 caliber rifles,... especially if they're cast bullets.

I'd say that a Handi chambered in .357 Maximum would be something worth having.

And the icing on the cake is,.. they're as simple to load as a .38 special.

In fact, I loaded many thousands of .357 Maximum cartridges with a set of Lee carbide .38/.357 dies.

Ditto - except substitute the word "hundreds" for "thousands"  ;D

Got a set of actual 357 max dies a while back and haven't even used them yet!
