H&R/NEF caliber question
« on: September 26, 2007, 06:13:21 AM »
Hi: I am new so please bear with me if I make mistakes as I learn.
That said, now to my question. Is there anyone who will make or rechamber a barrel for a 270wsm? A 26" or even a 28" would be nice. Is this even possible? Thanks LONGTOM

Welcome aboard! ;) No, the action isn't strong enough, it's not as strong as a TC Encore, and no one offers any short mag chamberings for it. H&R doesn't offer any magnum rifle chamberings for good reason.

How about a nice 26" 280?  ;D Unless you want to get a custom barrel made up, it sounds right up your ally.

EDIT: and my manners have flown out the window.... Welcome to GBO and to the forum. I like your handle. My Dad use to have an old Long Tom and loved stretching it's legs, for a shotgun that is ;D

A 280 with a 26" barrel reamed to 7mm gibbs might be as close to what your looking for that is possible on a handi.

If the 26" 280 barrel isn't what you had in mind, a good gunsmith can weld a donor underlug to a custom barrel to achieve the longer barrel you desire, but it would have to be in a non-magnum chambering due to the action strength limitations, that would be in the 30-06 family of case head size and pressure. Wayne York  of Oregunsmithing is doing just that for me with a  28" 6.5mm Shilen blank for chambering to a 6.5x55. ;)

Hi guys:
Thanks for the quick replies. I have been away for a while with my two boys school activities. I kind of figured that was going to be the answer. I have several in quit a few chamberings. I was just wondering. The 270wsm is such a great round. Thanks for the info. LONGTOM
