New coyote/deer pistol
« on: September 26, 2007, 11:47:50 AM »
Well I wasn't going to get a pistol right now, I was looking for a 45-70 rifle, but while I was looking at my LGS I came acrossed a savage striker in 243 setup with a simmons pro hunter 2-6x32 scope and a bipod for $380 out the door I just couldn't let that deal get passed up.  I've always wanted a striker, most of my hand guns have been TC's and a couple 44mag ruger wheel guns. I'll keep you all up to date on how it shoots, I plan on loading some up for it tonight and trying to get out to my range tomorrow and see how it shoots.

Man I'm a lucky SOB First I found the gun for a good price, then I cam acrossed a box of 243 reloads that I loaded for my brother-in-law last year I forgot I had, guess what I dont need to find a load for coyotes. I had 2 loads
1 65gr Vmax w/ 44gr H380 and CCI BR2 primer
2 65gr Vmax w/ 41gr Varget same primer

Both these loads ar hitting at the same place, the H380 a little tight group, but the varget was shot threw a hot barrel.

In the pic the taget got put on upside down so the 3 shot group was 2" low, the ones in the bullseye are are a 7 shot group 4 ofthe h380 and 3 varget the 2 outside ones of that group are from the varget load. All I have to say is I'm very pleased.

nice setup and it looks like you got a tack driver. the gun shop had one like it ecept it had a palm swell on the grip that someone made with duct tape and painted it. it was right at $250 but it wasn't what i was looking for and i passed. it had a tasco on it though

H-Nut : you are looking good to go...
30-06man : that is an awfully good price, is it not ? the price of ffl transfers would up it a bit... but that should be a good deer gun.  I may have to check that out, the gun costs almost the same as a tc barrel, plus a little..

I had one several years ago, traded it for a mule to take on an elk hunting trip to Colorado, I sure wish I had kept the gun and paid cash for the mule.

I no longer have the mule either, he was as hardheaded as my mother-in-law, and was just about as loud mouthed.

I picked up one in Stainless with a muzzle brake on it last spring at a gun show. I put a 2 1/2 x 8 Leupold on it. Don`t have any thing shooting like yours though. Mine is shooting alittle over 1 moa which I figure is good enough for a tractor gun. I figured it would be easier to carry than a rifle and still should be good to 150 yrds. for coyote.

Man the more I shoot this thing the more I want anotherone. Went out today and the first 3 shots cloverleaf at 100yrds then they opend up to 1" gruops, but I have 26 rounds down the tube and who nows if it was clean or dirty bore when I got it, so its probably fouled out so tonight I will give it a real good cleaning and put some more down the pipe tomorrow when I get back from the gun show. But this time it will be out at 200+yrds got to getready for them coyotes. What really supriced me was I have a box of factory Remington premier accutips 75gr and the hit 1" right under my 65gr handloads and group just as good, so in a pinch I know what factorys to buy.

Hope I can find another striker at the gun show in 308 for a good price. I don't thonk I will be going back to encore pistols again.
