Salivating
« on: September 26, 2007, 01:41:26 PM »
Visited a gentleman I know earlier this week who is a collector of drillings and combos. I got to see his private collection.  All of the guns were exceptional, enough to make your mouth water, but there was one I would have loved to carry home.  It was a Kreighoff O/U cape gun with 16ga on top and 6.5 X 58 on the bottom.  Must have had 22"-24" barrels and could not have weighed 6 pounds.  Beautiful engraving.  I used to think drillings were the ultimate and I still love them, but I keep getting drawn to the combos, the SXS and O/U higher quality ones. There are so many varieties of combos out there with all kinds of unique features, most with beautiful engraving, neat sights, and they are mostly petite and light guns.   I plan to use my Simson/Suhl cape (16ga X 25-35) a lot this hunting season, especially for turkey.  If I could scare up the funds, I'd buy the Kreighoff O/U to go with it.

Seems the threads have been light lately, so I thought I'd add my thoughts on combos.

Mike,
sounds like a great visit.  Now for the important question.  Did you take pictures?  It would be great to see some of the guns in this gentleman's collection.
Thanks
Doug

Could you give more info on the gun. What length chamber on the 16ga barrell? I'm not familure with the rifle caliber. Is brass available? Can it be made if not? Was the gun scoped? Was it for sale?

Sounds like a beauty. Byron

I'm the guy with the kreighoff.  16 is 2.5" and the 6.5x58R Sauer is a necked down and shortened 9.3x72R.  It is a straight taper case and is available from Bertram.  Very popular and accurate case and i have had numerous configurations in this calibre including double rifles.

Dave,

Glad you found the forum and are aboard.  I don't need to refer to you as just a friend anymore when I post something mentioning your neat collection of drillings and combo's.
