Anyone hunting with cast bullets out of a GP100 357 mag?
« on: September 27, 2007, 02:14:46 AM »
I was reading ammo reviews on midway yesterday and it got me interested in 357mag cast bullets.  I'm still looking for a GP100 and I was curious is anyone out there was hunting with cast bullets.

I've been shooting hard cast through my GP for years. I started out shooting the 158gr SWC which gave very good accuracy and performance on deer and hogs. Last winter I started developing a load using Beartooths 185gr gas check bullets. I haven't had a chance to try them on game, but the paper accuracy I'm getting is incredible. Long range 125yds accuracy is awesome at this range the 6" steel dosen't stand a chance and the 4" is in serious trouble. I can't wait to try it on some deer and hogs. And before someone turns on the flames, I am not suggesting that I or anyone  shoot game at over 70yds with the 357.

No flames here.  That's good shooting.

The most important part of bullet performance is shot placement. Then a good bullet shape or function takes over but you can hit an animal bad with the best load there is and the animal will probably get away to die slowly and not be found. If you hunt with a 357 and cast bullets place your shots well and you will collect the game. I use cast HP's quite a bit and they work well on small to medium game but only use them for head or neck shots on deer and hogs . Head shot deer with a Keith HP is a dead deer as fast as gravity can get it to the ground.
Practice and then practice some more and it will work fine for you. Know your limits that you can consistently keep your shots in a 4-5" circle and that's as far as you can shoot.

My son has killed several wild hogs with his 357 Black Hawk, and with no trouble using 158gr jsp from Sellier & Belott. From what I understand the cast bullets penetrate much better, so I would expect them to kill deer with no problem at all....

Good Luck!!!!!

i just got some black river bullets 170 gr cast. i am lucky because these bullets fit my cylinder ok. i'm not sure how they'd
fit other 357 cylinders. i would really like to use my 357 for hunting, but as the season draws in my 41 mag blackhawk
is emerging as the opening day favorite.

357 mag with either a 200 gn cast swc from Mt. Baldy or Colorado Cast Bullets, or a 200 gn rnfp for a 35 caliber rifle, over 12.4 gns WW296.  Mikey.

Yeah, I got a nice buck a couple weeks ago with my 6" GP100.  Lee 358-158-RF on top of 6.4 gr. of Unique, put the red dot right on his noggin' and squeeeeezed.  Knocked him right out of the tree!  OK, OK, it was a squirrel. ;D  Yes, you can hunt other things than deer with a 38/357 wheelgun.

Since I started this I actually found a good used GP100 and I'm sighted in 2 inches high at 25 yards with Winchester 158gr soft flat points.  If one gets that close I'll gladly take the shot, if not....  I'll put the shotgun on it.

Sounds like a great deer rig for as far as you can put them into the kill zone up to about 50 yards.

Good for you!

That still amazes me…I don’t care who you are or how much I care about you, I would never let you kill my son.  I can’t even begin to understand how much He loves us.

Harvested a nice doe this morning with my Highway Patrolmen shooting Buffalo Bore 180gr. Cast ammo., performed much better than Remington factory hunting ammo.

More details please!  Distance, angle of shot, point of impact, did you recover the bullet? Did the deer run, all the good stuff!!! ;D

Thirty yard shot, broadside, in one side out the other with the heart in the middle, trailed her about 25 yards.
