How do you make bullet lube. Help for a "Dummy"
« on: September 27, 2007, 03:54:56 PM »
Trying to find out how to make my own stick lube for use in my 450 lyman and rcbs sizers.
I got some from a member in Fl. that made his own, but lost track of who it was.
Need info from start to finish how to make it and get it set up to fit my sizers.

I make Felix lube and while it is STILL liquid, pour it into the lube/sizer.
let it cool some first. Do a google search for "Felix Lube"

I make my own lube. I go through about 2 3lb coffe cans of lube in a year. If a guy is only going to use 10 sticks or less in a year its kind of silly to make it. Ill find you a link that you can buy it cheap and the lube is good stuff. By the way the lube i make is a variation of felix lube.

try here http://www.lsstuff.com/lube/index.html Ive used his BAC lube and its a good lube and you cant beat the price. I also use verals blue soft occasionaly and its probably the best lube on the market but its a little more expensive. Like i said if i used only a few sticks a year i surely wouldnt go through the bother of making it myself.

1 one pound package of canning paraffin, 1 one pound jar of vaseline, 1 tablespoon of STP or something similar. Melt all together in a coffee can, and stir thoroughly. I usually throw in a few broken crayons for color, and this will load hundreds of cast bullets, and as long as you load by the manual, leading is less than many factory lubes. Have been using this formula for about 35 years. ;)

Lloyd Smale, How do you like the BAC? I am using the BPCR supreme for my muzzleloader. I think the stuff it great. What are you using the BAC on? Some of my bullets are going over 1700 FPS and I am thinking about trying a lube that is for higher speed. Thanks   Ron.

bac is a good lube. I use it in handguns and lever guns to 2000 fps. Its no better or worse then what i make myself. Its a good compromise. I store many thousands of bullets and if a lube is to soft it runs off the bullets in the hot summer and if its to hard it doesnt do crap to lubricate. Bac is a good medium soft lube and by the time a guy buys beeswax at the going rate it hardly pays to make it. I was fortunate to have some generous people give a good supply of beeswax for free or I wouldnt even fool with making it. If you look on his website he also sells bulk alox. Mixed with beeswax 5050 it makes the same lube as the NRA fomula or javalina. Its a darned good lube but a little to soft for me. Ive got a couple gallons of alox here that i experiment with when making lubes. Ive tried about everything and have found that if your going to make your own felix is tough to beat. What ive come to do is make variations of it. I add about 1/3 blue magma to it to firm it up. I dont believe in adding paraphin wax to do it because if im going to add something i want it to at least be a lube. Ive also experimented with replacing have the beeswax with Alox and using half corduba wax instead of beeswax. even adding a bottle of lee alox to a coffee can full of it. Alll of it works and is proabably a bit better then straight felix but the bottom line is that felix lube just the way felix designed it is a top shelf lube that will take care of about any cast bullet at any speed as is. Again its just to soft as is for long term storage for me. When im pressed for time (felix takes a while to make) what i will usually use is alox/beeswax 5050 and then add about 1/4 boughten hard lube to it like magama blue or red roster or lars hardest lube. It works too and is easy to make. Id stay away from the grease and vasaline based lubes. they work but ive had problems with the lube leaching into the powder with long term storage of ammo which will cause squib loads. Lee Alox tumble lube will do the same if you store ammo in a hot enviroment. there fine if your going to shoot up your ammo right away but i allways have ammo in storage. Black powder lube is easy. Mix crisco and beeswax 45/50 then add about 5 percent virgin olive oil

I go through alot of lube too Lloyd...been wanting to make my own for a while.

What is your recipe?

Thanks much!

That still amazes me…I don’t care who you are or how much I care about you, I would never let you kill my son.  I can’t even begin to understand how much He loves us.

This is my variation of felix lube. Like i said it works but how much better then straight up felix i dont know. I do know it takes to long term storage of lubed bullets better. I make up about a half a coffee can of felix the way the recipe says. When its done i add about a half a cup of corduba wax. 100 percent stuff we get at work. Then i will fill the rest of the can with a 5050 mix of magma hard blue or an equivelent hard lube and alox mixed 5050. The alox is the wax alox that is used to make nra 5050 or javalina its not the lee alox for tumble lubing. While it is still hot i will fill my lubesizer only part way. (my star holds 4 sticks of lube) let it set up and try some bullets. If it seems from experience to be to hard i add more alox and if it seems to soft i add more hard lube. ANother good lube for me was with jojoba oil. I mix 5050 alox/beeswax in a 3 lb coffee can to fill it about 3/4s full. Add about 4oz of jojoba oil and then fill the rest with hard lube. I think lars still sells the alox by the one gallon can. Its a darned good base for alot of lube experimenting. But bottom line is if a guy is going to shoot the bullets he casts within a couple months or can store them in a controled eviroment theres absolutely nothing wrong with a 5050 alox/beeswax lube for just about any cast bullet application that uses smokeless powder. I fooled with about everything i could think of and these lubes work. I try to stay away from gease and oil as the leach out of lubes and kill powder if you store your ammo or its exposed to high heat for any lenght of time. I also stay away from anything water based as it will dry out. the first batch of felix i made i didnt read the instructions well and instead of anhydrous llanolin i bought water based lanolin and in about 6 months every box of bullets i did had the dried up lube laying in the bottom of the box. Guess the bottom line is with the availabilty of finding good lube in different variations as cheap as its available i dont know if its worth fooling with. By the time a guy buys a gallon of alox and 20 lbs of beeswax and all the rest of the ingrediants and then factors in his time a 1.50 a stick for lube allready made looks pretty good.
