BigBill, I started ice fishing with my Dad and Grandpa as a kid and stayed with it into my late teens.  It's been quite a while since I've been. (even though my Mom lives on a lake in Michigan) My kids have been showing some interest in it lately, so I may get back into it.  Good luck this year!

This will be my second year I have never done it when i was a kid. I'll try it again my wife bought me all the stuff auger/tip-ups and i made a sled. I just have to wait for the ice to thickin its on but not safe yet the weather has been warm and cold not steady cold here. Usually ice fishing starts next week I hope it gets cold. Last year the ice was like saran wrap thin no cold and we had little snow. This year we had snow early and it looks like a tough cold winter I hope.    Goodluck                BigBill

Merry Christmas to all!!!!!!! :D

Spent some time at home in NE South Dakota, an ice fisherman's dream.  Dad and I caught our limits of 12"+ perch two days straight and then went smelting for northerns, got 4, all over 8 pounds.  I moved to Iowa last summer, I'm missing the ice fishing badly.

give a guy from s/e tex an idea about what you do to ice fish-  the only ice fishing we do is when the olive falls off the tooth pick in a martini.

I haven't gone ice fishing in years despite the fact that I live on the shores of a large lake and can go any day of the week if I wanted to.

I do have the equipment but I may buy one of those Jiffy augers to make it a quicker proposition ratehr than chisel through a foot of ice.

I'm new so what I know is limited I have a braided ice fishing line with a 3' leader (6lb mono) I use live minnows on my tip ups and I have a short ice fishing rod with small jigs or a small jigging minnow.  I guess i'm kind of limited I use no fish finder as most ice fisherman do.  I guess i do it to clear my mind of cabin fever we just get tired of staying inside and start jones'n to fish again but we don't have warm weather here up north as a matter of fact its below zero here tonight and the woodstove is cookin around 600 degrees the house is tee shirt warm if you know what I mean its ice fishing weather for sure. I hope to get out finally this weekend and give it a shot for a little while anyway.                 BigBill

You guys down south are lucky for sure its always warm!!!! :D  But i like the snow too so maybe I need two houses one their in the south too?

Greetings. Im an ice fishin fool. Only thing cutting into this is coyote and lion hunting. Well, OK, last year this time I shot a big ol cow elk so winter is not all ice fishin. A tip up is a set line type of rig that spans the hole and has a spring loaded flag. The line spool is suspended under water (on most models) and set to trip when a fish pulls some line the flag goes up. Love to see it trip, like watchin a bobber go down. We are allowed 6 tip ups per person, in some waters and what a burst it is. I was just out sunday with the wife. Not a tip up/six line lake but got three good trout. The ice was over 2 feet thick. A bar will get you about a 30 minute sweat fest for two holes, ok three if yer built like Joe Millionaire. We're allowed two per person on the lake we were on. I got a Jiffy 31 Legend 85cc 10inch, and it's a drillin machine, would'nt own anything else. I use a small jig with 1/2 a meal worm tipping the hook point. THey were taking a black head with big bright orange eyes, and a chrome mylar hairy thingymajigger best that day.

thanx for the replys--the icefishings sounds fun, but o degree weather--i got to rethink things here. actually i'm looking for a place where it doan git below 70-but i don't speak the language.
actually i have seen brim and crappie fishermen use something like the tip-up you describe-sans the spring.

These things come in a variety of designs and configurations.  The basic theory is a reel suspended under the water to keep it from freezing and a triggering device that will trip a flag as soon as a fish takes some line out.
Try Cabela's web page and search for them.

They work great as there is little resistance as the fish takes the bait and runs.  In New York my son and I ran ten tipups at once.  This can be a lot of fun and if the fish are hitting a lot of work.  They are also great to keep you warm running and the kids excited.

We eventually sat down one weekend and made a bunch out of mahagony and welding rod.  My son still has them to this day and uses them.

I just noticed your forum. We were fishing last Saturday here in Pontiac, Illinois. That's March 1 '03. Blue Gills are hitting good. We fish the borrow pits along Interstate 55. Love this sport, comes in just when there's nothing else to do. There is still 8-10" of ice here. Hope to upgrade my equipment next year. The old sitting on a 5 gal. bucket just isn't the same as the guys in the Frabil sled shelters. Glad to see this forum, hope all goes well with it.
