Pachmayr Grip/Forend vs T/C Composite Grip/Forend
« on: September 28, 2007, 07:33:58 AM »
Is there that big of a difference between the two???  I'd like to know before spending the money on the Pachmayr.

The T/C grip and forend are made to factory specs.  The bolt/screw right on.  They are a light polymer plastic and a the gun really does appear lighter when using them.

The Pachmayr grip and forend are rubber.  The forend needs a hanger bar screwed into the stock ruger dovetail nuts to hold it in place.  The grip can be tough to slide onto the frame, and in another post someone mentioned possible problems with Pachmayr grip causing hammer spring problems.  ( I have not noticed this.)

I have several of the Pachmayr gripper style grips on my contenders.  They have the finger grooves.   The grip and forend are pretty heavy, they make the gun feel heavy, and this added weight does help some with recoil.

I think the interfierence issue was with older Pachy grips.  I have never seen it with mine.  I started with the presentation grip and had trouble with it on heavier recoiling barrels.  I now have a gripper that seems to work better for me.

With wooden forearms I have them all floated.  With my rubber Pachy forearm it is just the opposite, and it works fine,  I don't know if it is the hanger bar or the rubber, but it has never seemed to affect accuracy in any way.

I thought the T/C composite grips where the bombs until I put a set of Pachmayr Decelerator grips an and will never go back. More comfortable and really helps tame the BIG boomers. Just my .02

The Decelorator grip & forend are the ones I'm wondering about.

I think I have 14 Pachy Decelotator sets for my 20 Contender frames.   I too never liked the Presentation grip, but I have really liked using the Gripper's ever since they first became available.   While they do help some on the handcannons, it's more that they just feel more comfortable and secure in my hand to me than even custom wood does (and I do love my custom wood sets).   I don't like or use factory wood any more.   Don't like the synthetic/composite sets either, but probably because I also don't like synthetic stocks on my rifles.   They just feel "tinny" to me and are noisier in the field when hunting.   I'm from the old school that believes a floated barrel is more consistantly precise, so do float all of my forends on Contenders whether in pistol or carbine/rifle configuration.   The best place for a solid rest without disturbing barrel harmonics on these TC's is just in front of the trigger guard.   Important when the target is small and the range long.   But you can get near the same results with a floated forend rested on shooting sticks or with a bipod mounted to the floated forend.

So I guess IMO you get what you pay for and the Pachy's are worth the extra cost for my TC pistola's.

The only thing I have against the Pachmyer grips is that I have broken and bent the 1/4-20 bolt that holds the grip onto the frame. The package that the grips come in say not for use with the 45-70.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the Pachmyer grips on Contenders and used them for several years but I now use the Rynite grips. I still use the Pachmyer fore end on my 14" barrels.

Hello Banjoman,

you wrote, "a quick trip to the hardware store for a better quality bolt takes care of this problem"

I ordered a grip/swivel stud from SSK industries and broke this one. I figured this should be the best quality bolt that I could get.

GOOD SHOOTING!

wow, I guess maybe. Those are suppose to be the fix all for broken screws. I haven't heard many complaints about them or the Uncle Mike ones.

I was at the range one day with my 375win bbl and presentation grip. Fired a shot and the gun fell apart--the 1/4" bolt had broken. You could see that it had not just snapped,  but had bent before breaking, meaning that the grip was not tight enough for the recoil because the bolt was too long. Got the threaded part out and sure enough the ends of the threads were worn. Got a new one(bolt),  ground off the amount that indicated wear and all is fine since.  Pat
