My opinion is heavily prejudiced by the fact that my favorite .357 is my 35+ year old Smith & Wesson Model 27 with an 8 3/8" barrel. Sad to say, but they just do not make 'um like they used to make 'um. JHT

the single largest thing driving the price of Pythons is that they are out of production. scarcity often drives price up.

i can appreciate your viewpoint , but the python has a certain mystique about it,and if it was second rate in quality and from just about anyone i've spoken with, one of the sweetest actions,
then there is no way a it would command a substantially higher price than the 27 (out of production) or for that matter a 686. let's not forget the colt cobra.

Warrior, I have used a very fine 6" Python and it was one sweet BRT. However, as I said earlier, I own shooters, not wall hangers. For the cost of a Python I will have my 686+ and plenty of reloading components. Now if it was a 7 shooter I probably would agree with it being the best ever. Until then it is 85% of the best ever;)

for those who missed it, 85% is how 6 compares to 7. and for my part, it is done. The 686+ will never bring the price of a decent Python. and the Python does have a VENTILATED rib. Now that is TOTALLY cool.

Many years ago when the L frame 586 first came out I had one, and miss it greatly. I would love to get another but this time a 686 6", as I just love S&W revolvers.

For me, it is the 4 inch S&W 586. Mine is an early production, 3 digit serial number gun. It was my duty gun back when we carried revolvers. We used to be able to pick up 500 round boxes of mild 38spl SWC reloads from the department range, and I did, every week. Quite a few Remington 357 mag 125 grn hollow points as well.

I have no idea how many rounds thru that gun, but I figure it was about 500 plus per week, double action, for about 3 years. Had to send it back to Smith twice to be "tuned up" as I had managed to shoot it loose. The double action was as slick as oiled glass, and I could not miss with that gun. I almost cried when they made me retire it for a 9mm auto.

Shot my first handgun deer with that gun, as well as a black bear at about 15 yards. I don't know who was more surprised...lol

Still have it, and often carry it in the woods while bumming around.

I only remember having two .357s. The first was a 4" Model 28 in college that I carried around with me everywhere, and the second was a 4" Model 19 I bought when under the spell of Bill Jordan. Oh, and an OM BH I didn't even shoot before sending it off to be converted to .44 Special. There might have been a few more, but it's not a caliber I appreciate much.

Based on that, I'd probably have picked the Model 27 if I'd gotten here earlier, because it's like the Model 28, but much nicer. I kept wanting to like the Model 19, but it just never clicked for me.

I owned a 4" Colt Trooper it was a fine gun but too heavy for my hunting needs and the 4" barrel wasn't what I wanted. The Trooper is known as the poor mans Python if I remember correctly. I had a SW 19 4" and that was a very fine gun too but the 4" barrel didn't suit my purpose. I've also owned a couple Ruger Security Sixs and Speed Sixs with 4" barrels. I finally settled on a Ruger Security Six in 6". I installed Wolfe springs in all my Rugers, that gave them the trigger these guns deserve. If I remember correctly the Security and Speed Six was developed by Bill Ruger for the Border Patrol as a lite easy to carry side arm at a reasonable cost. I've shot this and hunted with this one for years and wouldn't trade it for anything.

I've got a Colt King Cobra with 8 inch barrel, Hogue wood grip and custom trigger job....had it for 15 or so years....wouldn't take nothing for it....

I have a Hi-way Patrol version of the 27, if memory serves me it's a mod 28. There has been a trigger job done on it. Other than that it is still stock. It is my all time favorite shooter. I can handload anything from a low recoil plinker to a super hot flesh destroyer with it and not have to worry. The frame is big enought to handle any load. The darn thing just flat shoots dead on. I've used it as my primary hunting sidearm for over 30 years and it's never failed me. Everyone who shoots it say the same thing, that is one fine shooting gun. Mine may be an anomoly, but is the finest I've held or shot and I've owned more than a few.

Single action.......original Ruger Flat-top!
Double action......Ruger Security-6 (Speed-6 and Service-6 also, depending on your needs).

I've owned several Pythons over the years... I did fire a couple of them quite a bit, but not 1,000 rounds through any one of them... They wouldn't make a pimple on a dogs behind, compared to an old S&W M-27... lol

I just wonder about the experience level of those who claim their brand is the best. I know a guy who put 50,000 rds through his 6" Python, three times. The last time it was rebuilt he was told 'the next time you bring it in for a rebuild, you will get the front and rear sight back'. Now HIS opinion on the Python I listen to.

Tough question. My first was a Security Six that I loved until I got a SS GP-100. Even Better! Had a Python, really smooth action but couldn't justify the price difference. Still can't. It was only recently that I set aside my obsession for Rugers enough to give S&W an unbiased look and have to say, I am impressed. Can't argue against them. I had a Dan Wesson in the 70's that was by far the most accurate I ever owned but after about 1000 of my insane handloads (oh, the foolishness of youth) it was nothing more than a loose bag of bolts. Those loads never bothered my Rugers, still don't.

I really like my Model 28. Had it for 35 years and it just shoots and shoots. Had a Python ,real pretty but just too tempermental, It always jumped time. Had to send it back to Colt 6 times. the last time I got it back, I sold it. thinking the GP100 might be a close second tho.
