How many S&W revolvers have coil springs ? other than j frames . many feel they are better. I have sent S&W revolvers back to the factory for repair , have had smiths repair S&W revolvers. Rugers have had very little trouble with the hotest of hot loads thru. them . As for best lets ask which would last longest doing the job for what it was intended to do for the longest time ?

I would have to say Blondes. I got one brand new nearly 40 yrs ago and she's holding up pretty well. I haven't always treated her with the best of care but she's never let me down.

Yes, and a model 28, 57, 29, & 629, Plus a bunch of K frames.  They never broke.

What I said was "they seem delicate compared to most Rugers."   Imagine a 27 sitting along side of a Ruger Redhawk in .357.  That would be Ruger's largest DA .357 and Smith's largest .357.  The Smith is delicate in comparison.   The operative word here is "compare".

Heck, compare a S&W M-27 to a Redhawk, and the Ruger seems pretty clunky...  Does that make the Ruger clunky??

One thing is for sure, the M-27 is FAR from delicate, and you won't be wearing one out any time soon!

Yep, a Ruger is clunky compared to a Model 27.  You could say the Ruger is "over-engineered".  And yes, the S&W is a fine revolver.  And so was the Python that I gave to my son to play with.

Does anyone even make a new Model 27 anymore?  I know they make "look-alikes" like the 627 and the light weight 327 (stuff with key holes on them, like gov'mt housing has), but is the old style 27 even made anymore?  I thought they stopped making them.  Like the Edsel.  I guess my age is showing now.

I believe Ruger GP 100s and Redhawks are still being made in some calibers, right?   And the 101s?
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

I see a lot of folks like the S&W model 19 and 66 revolvers.  This is not surprizing as they are really fine tools but I sold all of mine and kept my K frame guns in 38 spl.  The Model 19s would shoot loose if fed a steady diet of magnum loads (I know because I did it to two of them).  They worked fine with 38s though and would run forever.  The N frame smiths are just too large for my hands and I never could get comfortable with them.  The I found Ruger Security Six's and all my cares went away.  After a few cheap mods to the springs they came with They shot everything I could put into them.  My oldest one is now pushing 35 years old and has seen at least 100,000 rounds through it over half of them were very stout magnum loads I preferred when I was younger.  The net result is that the revolver has never failed and is as tight as the day I bought it though it shows a lot of holster wear.  Recently I bought a stainless GP 100 and it is just as rugged at the security six though a little heavier thanks to the full underlug.

For what purpose????  I carried a S&W mod 65 round butt for a lot of years.  I think it's the best combat revolver made.  For a hunting hand gun, I would prefer something a bit stronger than a K frame S&W.  The L and N frame S&Ws are very good.  Colt trooper and python are great.  Rugers are also good.  You didn't specify single or double action.  These are the only brands I have owned.  I trust them.  If the gun is for fighting, I would carry warm loads in .38 spec, loaded with a good bullet.  For hunting, I am a cast bullet shooter.

I'll vote for the redheads.  For a alaround 357 lets get a vote for the EAA made in Germany.  I have one and haven't had a bit of trouble with it. 8)

Never owned a Python but several serious revolver shooters I know prefer them hands down.  Have shot a Dan Wesson but never liked their style.  Have also owned several S&W's over the years (models 19, 27, and 28) and a couple Ruger's (BH and GP100).

Anyway, when it came down to just having just one .357 revolver, I went retro and bought a Ruger Security Six SS.

Re: BEST 357 EVER? The Original of course , The S&W Registered Magnum
« Reply #192 on: January 14, 2011, 01:52:14 AM »
Let me put this debate to rest.  The best 357 ever is the S&W Model 27 owned by General Patton

Hello dougk
General George S. Patton's gun was the First Manufactured gun made in .357 Magnum and was Known as simply "The .357 Magnum". S&W designer and family member Douglas Wesson came out with them after being Prompted by Philip Sharp the famed California hand loader who expanded on the .38 Special round taken to new Heights. It involved making the existing .38 Special cases and 1/8" Longer in Length and the Original rounds had large magnum Pistol primers when Winchester Arms agreed to produce them after Wesson sent them an experimental 38-44 Target sighted revolver to fire them in. This experimental 38-44 revolver had a special heat treated frame and cylinder to with stand the Higher Pressures and velocity of the .357 Magnum round. Once Winchester Arms agreed to produce the ammo in .357 Magnum form, Doug Wesson hand selected his Best Gun smiths to build the Famous Registered Magnums as they were called. The phrase Magnum came from Wesson as well as he said Wine is it's best in "Magnum" form, so that name stuck for this cartridge and hand built custom handgun. These Registered Magnums were the highest quality revolver to ever come out of S&W Then or since.

To obtain one, they had to be ordered and the Purchaser of them had the choice in barrel length's from 3-1/2"-8-3/4" length in Quarter Inch increments. You also could have ordered any combination of front & Rear sights on your gun being the S&W Offerings or Many that were custom sight made by The King Gun sight Corp. of California. They Offered these guns in Blued or Nickel finish and you had your choice of stocks from Walnut, Mother of Pearl, Ivory, or Walter Roper Custom large shooting grips. Roper built his custom shooting Grips for many Camp Perry competition shooters back then. Once you Placed your order for one of these custom hand built guns, S&W would send you a customer Registration card to be filled out and sent back to the factory. This card asked what ammo you wanted the gun sighted in with whether it be .38 Special or .357 Magnum Cartridges and at what range or hold you wanted to be used whether it be the Old standard Six-O-Clock hold or Point of aim at your desired distance. S&W then would send back a Frameable Registration certificate with the customers name, Address and desired distance and hold that the weapon was sighted in at.

Wesson took a Gamble offering this custom handgun with a country just recovering from a Major depression and with this gun being the highest priced gun they ever offered at $61.00 a Piece, but before long the order's started pouring in at an alarming rate and in 1938 S&W dropped The Registration process but still offered the same gun until all Gun production ceased in 1940 for The World War II effort. The First Year for these guns to be offered was 1935 and they only produced and shipped 615 of them total for that year. General George Patton's gun shown above was a first Year Registered Magnum, with other's from that year going to some very special people as Philip Sharp the Cartridge developer, J. Edgar Hoover the Famed head FBI agent, and one was sent to the Head of Winchester Arms for developing the round. Patton fondly called his registered Magnum "His Killing Machine" and it left the factory sighted in at Dead On, at Point Blank Range with .357 Magnum ammo..

Shown below is my 1935 First Year Registered Magnum. it is Wearing a set of Walter Roper Custom shooting stocks from that time span. It is towards the end of the First Year production, and shipped to The Bowen Brother's Hardware Company of Augusta, Georgia on December 13, 1935 sighted in at 25 Yard's at the Six O-Clock hold accompanied with One Box of .357 Magnum ammunition and directed toward the store owner Charles Bowen. It was sold to a US Army Captain by the name of Rodgers who I assume worked out of The Augusta, Georgia Arsenal during his service tour. It the Traveled back to California with his after his tour, where it resided until 2009 when I bought it to return to it's rebel roots in the deep south, and added into my collection. I do have the Original factory letter on this gun telling where it shipped, when it left and show's it was directed to be Charles Bowen being the owner of Bowen Brother's hardware company of Augusta, Georgia in 1935.

I decided to do some more research on the weapon and looked into researching the family of Bowen and was lucky to find the Last Bowen to still be alive and well and his Name was Charles Bowen III still Living in Augusta, Georgia. I found his phone number on the Internet and decided to call him. We had a very detailed phone conversation of better than an Hour as he told me his family roots and how his family members had been involved in firearms heavy since before the Civil War. I asked MR. Bowen to Put his words down on paper if he would for me of which he Obliged and sent the Typed letter copy letter shown below to me. I have added his letter to my Registered Magnum file to add to The Guns Provence and I hope you enjoy seeing it.  I know some that will read this may or may not know about the Famous Registered magnums or what they meant to a Gun Hungry America, but to me there is no better .357 Magnum on Earth than the Original S&W offered .357 Magnum Handguns. In case you are wondering, I do shoot and enjoy this gun as Col. Douglas Wesson intended us to as well., and after 76 Years it is still as smooth  and refined....as Tennessee Whiskey... Regards, Hammerdown

I have a friend with a mint 19-1, with a 4" barrel.  I've shot it with both .357 Magnum and .38 Special ammunition.  Fine revolver!  But I have a 1937 Registered Magnum, and it is a better .357 IMO, so I voted for the Model 27.  I also own a 1967 Colt Python, and it is a fine revolver as well, nearly as smooth as the RM, but still just a little small for the full powered loads.  I realize that most people here have probably never fired an original .357 Magnum, so you haven't experienced the finest .357 Magnum ever made.  The RM, and later the M27 are large enough to shoot a steady diet of real .357 Magnum ammunition without developing timing issues.

Hello
You have fired, or owned a S&W Registered Magnum ? If you have there is no way to begin to compare the quality and durability putting a Ruger GP-100 in front of one of those, What do you mean saying "Without Support" ? My Registered Magnum has not been back to the factory since it left there in December 1935 and Locks up like a vault and eat's full House Magnum loads like they were nothing. S&W was so confident of their High quality and durability when they built the First .357 Magnum hand guns that The Registered Magnum process was their way of offering the owner a Full Life time warranty on the gun. To some Guns are tools, and I Much prefer a Snap-On tool over a Craftsman tool any day.... ;)

Yep I have fired one 12 shots , no I don't own one . It is a fine revolver but its 1890 tech. Metal alone is light years ahead of what was aval. when it was built. Coil springs are far better and the reason most all new guns use them .I point out whats strongest . I have watched Rugers over loaded to come close to matching 357 maximun loads shoot for years in IMHSA with little ill effect if any . I have not seen any S&W last with that punishment . Snap on is leading tech not 100 year old tech. I to use some of there tools . You have a great gun and if it were mine I would not over load it either . It would/should have a better trigger pull than a untouched Ruger. As for paper work from S&W they wanted to keep up with where this powerful handgun was going in the days it was built if it was used by bad guys it could soil their good name look at the tommy gun and its reputation. IE the orig buyer had to send in a cupon to get the paper work it it was lifetime warrt. it didn't need all that .

Hello
Your Information is off the Wall here on the Registered Magnum revolvers to say the least. S&W used the very same Metal in their famous Registered Magnums as they did all their other guns. The Difference was, the Heat treating done to the registered Magnums frame and cylinders. When Douglas Wesson came out with the Registered Magnum hand gun his idea was sparked to captivate a Hunters audience not Law Enforcement officials. Now given the fact Wesson was a very smart business man he did send one of the very first ones built to J. Edgar Hoover as a Gift. The country was coming out of a major depression so with Wesson making this gun available on a Custom ordered customer ordered gun, it was a bit chancy, but they took off with Great success. The first year saw just 720 of them built but the Next Three years of them being in production floored the factory with customer orders to the Point they dropped the Registration Process, which in essence was S&W's way of offering owners of them a Nice Printed certificate with their name and address printed on it, which the factory returned to them after they filled out the registration card which accompanied the revolver's when they were shipped out of the factory.

The Truth of the matter is, that there were very few that actually sent the registration card back in to the factory once they received or bought the weapons as there are far more guns out there without this registration certificate than ones with it. That did not mean that S&W did not back their products with factory service if there was any problems with them, as they still do today if you send one in to them for repairs they cover the shipping to & From and in most cases cover parts and labor as well. As far as Coil springs being better in any handgun, that is False. Coil springs get compressed over time and loose their original tension loaded specifications. A Flat Main spring is far more superior and will always out last or out perform any coil main springs used and the trigger pull is far more smoother with the use of a flat Main spring like S&W uses in their larger frame revolver actions. As Far as Ruger's being more rugged than S&W's that's another Myth.

The reason for Ruger's guns being more hefty in size compared to a S&W is due to the fact they are Cast Investment forged, whereas S&W's are drop forged then sent to a coining process to Pound the Molecular structure of the steel used in them to provide a more dense structure of the carbon steel. They are then sent  back to heat treating Process to make them more durable and stronger without the Massive over kill use of Metal that Ruger has to use due to their cheaper production techniques. I have seen Many Ruger's blow up as well, Don't be fooled by their size it has little effect on their durability you can blow up any gun if they are pushed past their Limits & Ruger certainly does not have any durability edge over S&W as far as standing up to the test of time.

Historically there have been Far More S&W hand guns used in  all competition shooting events as well as Thompson center arms pistols in the IMHSA  sanctioned events across the nation than any Ruger's in these events. In the Realm of  Revolver Fast shooting events S&W's has always been first  and foremost in them from Trick shooter Ed McGivern who fired Five shots from his Target sighted .38 Special revolver into a Playing Card in 45/100ths of a second when it was thrown into the air at a shooting event on August 20, 1932 at the Lead Clube Range in , South Dakota. This Timed event was also challenged by Jerry Miculek  his attempt to beat McGivern's 5 shot record resulted in a time of .57 seconds falling short on beating the all time record. This has never been tried or beaten with any Ruger's as they fail to lock up and fire as fast or efficent as any S&W hand gun.

Ive owned a S&W model 19, Ruger Security Six, Ruger gp100, Dan Wesson and a Colt Python.  I liked them all. the Pythons trigger out of the box was unreal. I also killed a fox with it at over 100 yards. The Dan Wesson was just as accurate and i still own it. I really like the GP100 very accurate ,built like a tank. I like he sights that are on the 19 best and it also has a good trigger.
Even though it was an old design Id have to say the Python was the greatest .357 ever. It had looks , balance , great trigger and accuracy. Id follow that by a gun I dont even own but have shot a friends quite abit, A S&W model27.

"Well, have you?"

Yes, I own one, and have fired it many times. I have actually owned three of them, a 4", 5", and a 6.5".  I have fired both the 5", and the 6.5" many times.  I feel the Python is pretty close in the fit/finish department, but due to it's smaller size does not seem as robust.  The minty 19-1 that i fired was very nice as well, but not as smooth as either the Python or the registered magnum.
