Excuse a novices ignorance here but what about the 45lc/410 barrel? Could the longer chamber be used for the 454 or would the pressure be too great?

Only if the barrel was on an SB2 frame, the Survivor has an SB1 frame, and then it would need to have sights added, it's not drilled and tapped for a scope rail and only has a bead front sight. On top of that, the long jump to the rifling doesn't help accuracy. Do a search for 450 Mongo.

I sent my 45/410 barrel back to H&R and had it drilled, tapped and fitted with a scope rail. I had been using the 45LC ammo but I think I will try the 454 Casull next....

No reason to use trimmed .454 cases.

. 45 Colt cases are much cheaper and more available.

You don't need to trim them.

They will produce all the power you need or want in the H&R.

With the same bullet and powder charge the Colt case will produce lower pressures.

Remember the .454 Casull revolvers were originally built around the factory .45 Colt case.

Just got here: BAGTIC is right about not needing to trim Casull cases...unless you just want to use different primers. Modern brass has a strong web just as good as Casull brass. If you only have revolvers in 45 Colt, you can simply load heavy stuff to COAL greater than the cylinder length of your revolver (learned that one from the great Ross Seyfried) so that the bullet will poke out and not function. BTW, Seyfried noted five shot Freedom Arms cylinders longer than Ruger which is longer than Colt.

I'm for the 460 if i change anything. I have a Winchester Trapper and don't think the COAL trick would work. I am afraid of mistakenly loading Casull loads into my Trapper: too close visually, besides, the .460 gives it enough of a difference in performance to make it worth the effort.

I would like to join your ring, if you start it; but i haven't even gotten a barrel yet.

I spoke to Fred on this last week and I think it's likely to come sooner rather than later. He mentioned that he had moved a good deal of stuff and that he was about ready to buy some more. I reminded him that he can sell the stuff here at GBO if he wants to list it since he is a Sponsor. He said he just might do that.

I asked about his break even point for reamers and I think he said he needed to rent one either three or four times to break even and only then does he begin to see a profit on them. I assured him that he should likely see a profit on the reamer from rentals to you handi guys wanting to rechamber. I suspect you'll be seeing it available in the not so distant future.

I talked with Fred today, he's ordering the 460S&W reamer soon, I placed an order for it and the 30-30AI reamer today, said he ship em to me when he gets it sometime in April, so I won't be buying a reamer.  ;)

I finally got the reamer today, got it all reamed and ready to send it back already, also reamed one of my 30-30s to Improved. Took about an hour to do both, the 460 taking most of the time, the pilot was too big for the bore, it fit fine at the muzzle but was too tight at the chamber end, so after I figured that out, I removed the pilot and finished the last 3/8" without it, the reamer fit the chamber perfect by then so I didn't think it would hurt without it.  ;)

Hi Troy,
The pressure that the 454 generates is far higher than the 45 Colt.
The result(s) wouldn't be good. Can range anywhere from hazardous to dangerous.
Please use the 45 Colt only.At least, your rifle will be intact.
The 45 Colt will handle most situations.
The old calibers and guns got the job done

Wednesday I got my reamer in the mail, but had to wait until Saturday to do the job...lots of cutting oil and about 5 minutes of gentle work and I now have a .454 handi. Took it out this morning and it's shooting better than it ever did as a .45 (which wasn't so bad). It also handled full-power loads with no signs of overpressure or trouble. I'm smitten.

Any other updates here?  I think mt next barrel will be a 45LC an I will probably rechamber it for the 454 as well.  Any range and hunting reports out there?

I've only shot the 250gr SST w/H110 up to 2600fps in the 460S&W, accuracy wasn't the best at 2½" @ 100yds, gonna work on the 300gr SST next.

Tim, if you can I would appreciate your trying some .45 LC';s out of the new .460 and reporting on what accuracy you are getting. I don't have a .45 LC yet but just finished reading this thread and am looking forward to getting one...Thanks buddy and have a very Merry CHRISTmas....<><....:)

is it the wacky Governor of Washington State that's has been getting all the press about her decision to allow CHRISTmas, christian, and overall religion bashing at the state house? Any recall petitions for her yet, can I sign one?... ;D

A good read.  ;)

Thank you for redirecting me Tim.

I am seriously thinking on a Casull conversion of my 45Colt carbine barrel.....
