.44-40 in a .444 Marlin????

Huh?  Anybody try this? 

One of the neat things I found out about the 444 rifles and carbines...is if you have 44-40 ammo, and the bullets are sized 428 or more, they will shoot with good accuracy out of the 444s. At the Shootist Holiday 1999...with Winchester 44-40 ammo my Win 444 B’ Shadow would put them into three inches at 100 yards. And they may sound like a wimp loads when you fire them...but the iron silhouettes told a different story...the pigs went down with authority at 100 yards and the full sized deer silhouette rang and shook accordingly at 150 yards. If your 44-40 ammo is sized .426 for the older 44-40s then the accuracy is pretty bad. But we found .428 shot really well.

Never heard of that one before. I'd guess the case fireforms a bit but it doesn't sound too dangerous as the pressure on the case must be very loww with the super long throat. I would imagine that shooting alot of these would make a nasty carbon ring in the chamber causing a tight fit when switching back to 444.

You can also shoot 44 Spl, 44 Russian and 44 Mag through a 444 but as billy said, you could develop a nasty carbon ring in the chamber.  I used to plink with 44 Russians from a earlier Marlin 444 and had a ball with them - had to load them single shot but it was a lot of fun - also had to clean the chamber frequently to avoid ringing the chamber.  Mikey.

cant see the need. 4440s are just as expensive as 444s and if you handload either can be loaded for about the same cost.
