358 Win. Hog kill
« on: September 30, 2007, 10:18:07 AM »
Had to go out to the lease this weekend to work on stands, drink whiskey, play poker, put the last of the deer backstrap on the smoker and hunt hogs. Wel we got there just before dark and rode around in my truck deciding on new stand locations. As we finished it was just dark and on the way to the cabin we passed one of my feeders and there were two hogs under it. I turned the key off, whipped up my 358 and let him have it right thru the shoulders about a third of the way up from the bottom of his chest. He ran 7 paces and dropped. He weighed a bit more than 250 pounds.  The bullet clipped on shoulder, went thru the center of the heart and lungs, smashed the off shoulder and exited thru a 3/4 inch hole. Range 40 yards and the load is 46.0 grs. of 748 under a 250 grain Speer Hotcor. The little BLR is beginning to grow on me. This is the true test of a round. I still like the 200 grain round nose corelokt better in the 358 but I still have part of the test run with the 250's and the rifle is sighted in for them.  Gutted, skinned and quartered him then gave him to Tommy the camp cook for future lease meals.  The hog was covered with red mud and was reddish brown under the mud and was a very clean smelling boar

No, just on deer.  I liked the quicker expansion of the 200 grain Remington RN corelokt and the slightly lighter recoil.  I let the scope get me a bit on the hog I shot, poor position actually.
