I am new here and happy to find a place where I can discuss the 45 LC.
Now I do not reload, between work, wife, and responsibilities there is barley time to hunt. I have hunted here in SC all my life, but 3 years ago I became interested in hand gun hunting, although I have owned and shot a number of hand guns, I fell in love with the 45LC.
Last year I was lucky enough to take 2 wild hogs with my Ruger Black-Hawk, 1 was a 150lb sow and the other was a 225lb sow, (I don't know how to post pics yet) Both were taken on the same day at about 40 yards using 200 gr CCI Blazers. Both were shot in the shoulder the 150lb sow was a pass through, and on the 225lb I found the bullet just under the skin on the opposite shoulder.

I am looking for someone who makes a 250-260gr JFN at about 1000-1100fps? The Buffalo Bore stuff has way too much recoil, and recoil is why I chose the 45 over the 44mag.

I was also woundering about the soft cast standard load that Buffalo Bore makes, it has the ballistics I am looking for but I am worried about barrel leading?

That Buffalo Bore load is the best option for you out there. Stick to heavier bullets for the 45 colt, at least 255gr or above and you really don't need a lot of velocity. The traditional 255gr bullet at 850fps is a great load with a cast bullet (Buffalo Bore does not do a soft cast bullet in the cowboy action since) just make sure they have a flat nose to them, WFN, LFN, or Keiths they all will kill very well.

Since you are limited to factory ammo that Buffalo bore load is really the only game in town and Buffalo Bore ammo is really first rate, bloody expensive, but as good as anyone can load. I have shot thousands of similar loads and they will kill all out of perportion with the ballistics. Stick with cast bullets for hunting too in my never humble opinion, the leading you will occasionally get is easily cleaned and cast bullets are 100% reliable not something that can be said for any jacketed bullet.

I've looked at Corbon, I don't know how the 225gr DPX would hold up.

I just ordered 4 boxes of 255gr Gold Dot HP @ 950fps from Stars and Stripes Ammo, I'm hoping they will be decent hunting loads.

Anyone used the Corbon DPX for hunting?

Check with GBO Sponsor Rod Reed of Reed Ammo and see what he has that might work. If he doesn't have it in his product line he might be talked into making it if you want enough, what enough is I don't know. Ask Ron.

First : welcome Gene.
Probably you will be happy with the bullets you ordered. They have a good reputation with the jacketed bullet shooters...The reccomendations so far were also very good.. the bullets used on the two prior hogs did the job evidentally though they seemed a little light for what most think the 45 colt loads should be. I think you will find a concensus that heavier, non-deforming, but slow bullets would do the trick for deer and hogs. and complete pass throughs would be guaranteed.. almost anything will do with good placement, of course... but : I imagine you will decide over time what you come to see as best... I bet if you watch the thread a while you will get lot of answers..

Well, my ammo still hasn't come in yet. But I went deer hunting today and filled a doe tag, 85lbs at about 40 yards using the 45LC Blazer 200gr HP, I know I still have alot to learn but the damage it did to that doe was amazing, went through both lungs and stopped at the rib cage. It liquified the lungs, and the bullet did not fly apart, she went down with in 5 yards. I can't wait to see if the 255gr Gold Dot will give me a pass through.

I am still trying to post pics, but the site keeps telling me the pics are too big, I will get my son to figure that out.

You may want to try out the CorBon 225 DPX. It is a hunting bullet and I would bet it will hold up real well on medium game.

If you are downloading your pictures from a digital camera to your PC, the folder that receives the picture should have an 'Export Still Pictures' program, or something of that nature. Just click it, and on the next screen click ' re-size picture', and it will make another picture that is smaller. It may have the same name but with an extension. Example: If you name a picture ; wild hog , it may read wild hog_1.

He he he, the OP posts three success stories with the 200 Blazers and all most can do is tell him he should use a different bullet. Amazing, reality has little value compared to what some experts think should happen....

I've been shooting the .45LC for only 30 years so I still have a lot to learn, and most of the big game I've taken with the cartridge has been with heavier bullets, but for the game the OP is hunting the 200 Speer HPs seem to work very well. 20 years ago I shot a 150# buck with a 200JHP from Speer, the old "flying ashtray", at over 1200 fps. It killed the deer but I would have liked more penetration - the bullet had shed the jacket and the core looked just like a quater. The current 200JHP is a different design (w/bonded core), stouter and slower expanding, so combined with the slower 1000 fps velocity it should very work well - which of course it does. While I believe that for larger game or for more demanding hunting conditions (range, angle, etc.) the heavier load from S&S (255gr@950fps) will give him a greater 'safety margin', it is hard to argue with the success he experienced with his "too light" bullet and the low recoil he desires.

As Lonestar said in part : I shot two bucks one day apart with my 454 casull back n the day, with the lightest factory soft nose bullets, and got different results : at 40 yards the bullet did not exit on a quartering oncoming shoulder shot, but the deer fell and could not get up as both shoulders were damaged badly, one toward its front and the far side a little farther back, and it died in a couple of anxious minutes or so. the second one was a little over a hundred yards and dropped on the spot with a bit more of a true quartering onward shot, and it just moved a hoof for bout half a minute... the bullet exited with a large wound just behind the shoulder

This thread reminds me of the time my dad killed a fat little 6 point with an open sighted 30/30 rifle at 200 yards. Killed the buck on the spot. I didn't have the heart to tell him that he couldn't do that with a 30/30.

I disagree Lloyd. He should spend time loading and shooting with the kids.

I took my Rossi M92 .45 Colt out to shoot today and those Blazer 200s were the most accurate load from it. Just one ragged hole at 25 yards with factory irons and my tired old eyes. Nice. I might find out just how they do on a deer myself one of these days.

Can you buy 45 colt ammo at a reasonable price? It seems to be really expensive. Where do you guys buy it, or does everyone load their own?

Gene R, reloading does not take that much time, once you get set up. I suggest reloading also.
