Temperature resistant powders
« on: June 12, 2003, 07:35:46 AM »
I got a canister of Varget for the first time yesterday and hope to burn some soon.  I've been looking through all my books but I haven't had any luck finding anything mentioning any powders besides Varget that are good at being resistant to temperature changes.  Can anybody help me out?

All of Hodgdon's Extreme line of powders are supposed to be consistent through temperature changes.

Take a look at http://www.hodgdon.com/ to see the lineup.

Yep, Hodgdon is good for being consistent at different temps.

I have been using Ramshot's TAC in my 223 and 308. I was using Varget in the 223, but TAC being a ball powder flows great through my Dillion 550B, where Varget did not do so well. All of Ramshot's powders are suppose to be the same at any temp. Also Alliant's RL-15 is now temp-insensitive.

It's important to note that some powders are unusually susceptible to temperature fluctuations. I tried one of the Hodgdon rifle powders and it seems to behave as advertised in different temperatures.  I'm going to keep buying it.

VV N-500 series powders are  temperature insensitive ,too. I really like N-560.
