What happened to the 480 Ruger?
« on: October 02, 2007, 04:24:36 PM »
I see that Ruger no longer makes the super red hawk or any revolver in 480 Ruger . What happened to this cartridge? I thought this would be a great choice for those who wanted more then the 44 mag without the recoil some of the other hand cvannons have.

The N frame S&W is not large enough for the .480 Ruger neither is the BH/SBH platform which is why Ruger never chambered it. You might wedge in a five shot in either but no way would Ruger admit a five shot was needed due to size/strength and I don't see S&W offering a round that isn't even doing well with another company's name on it. Nope not gonna happen in this life time. IF you want one it will have to be custom made for you.

Gone the way of the dodo I am afraid to say...too bad too...I don't think that Ruger marketed that round effectively...Seemed like a pretty effective round.

I just got off the phone with ruger customer service. And according to them  the 480 Ruger in the super redhawk has not been discontinued but they have stopped production so that the engineering department can work on a problem they were haveing with the cylinders,. What the problems were he wouldn't say and there are no plans to do any recalles in the revolver, and it will be back as soon as they do there modifications. I myself thought the 480 was an answer for those who wanted something a bit more then the 44 mag with out the recoil of say the 454 460 or 500.

Just one of those things.
Expensive to shoot, expensive brass. Ruger's Cylinders are pretty thin between the chambers.
Still a great round, plenty for most any hunt, even when fired sub-sonic.

The biggest problem with the SRH in .480 is that sometimes the extractor will miss an empty case, causing a bit of trouble if you want a quick reload... Not really too expensive to shoot if you reload and  cast your own bullets.....Never had an issue with the thinness between the chambers.

Now a .475 Linebaugh would be nice.....

I bought a 475 with a 480 cylinder... looked at the reloading manuals and a lot of the loadings overlap with the 475 shooting a little heavier bullet at the same speed in most instances... I shot some factory 475 and 480, there is a big difference in recoil and the 480 is milder and shoots a lighter bullet.. I would just get the 475 L  and load it down or get the optional chamber.. the rounds are kind of expensive for either factory round and I have found the 475 can be loaded to really light loads and can shoot the same light bullets the 480 can be loaded for up to the heavy bullets, and all either slow or fast for bullet wt.
I understand that you may want a lighter gun than a 475 would be ... so perhaps the 44 mag is your choice and you can use specials or magnums... can your colt be loaded up a bit for the other uses you would like to put a handgun to ?
there is always the 445 super mag : 44 magnum +magnum; or 44 magnum or 44 special ... that is some versatility....

as to doo doo birds: I thought you meant that the ruger co. came out with a cartridge and like a doo doo bird ... appreared sat around and made a little splash, and left a bunch of **** behind.... ( got other companies to offer chamberings, brass, bullets, guns, cylinders... then left with just a memory on the benches and hatbrims of life.)

As an owner/shooter/loader of the 480, I would indeed be sad if they discontinue it.  Of course, since I load all my own ammo for it, I guess they aren't getting much money from me these days.  It has worked fine for me, and has taken two deer cleanly with one shot apiece.  While I did fire a finishing shot on the bigger of the two, he was not going anywhere if I hadn't.

Regarding comments about the cylinder...  I have not had any trouble with the extractor missing empties.  However, I did have a lot of trouble initially with sticky cases.  Factory loads were very difficult to extract, and handloads were darned near impossible.  I had to use a wooden black powder pistol ramrod to tap them out individually.  No signs of over pressure, and the loads were only warm per the reloading manuals.  After a bit of research on-line, I found that this is a common problem with the Ruger 480s due to the thin cylinder walls and tendency towards chamber diameters on the high side of spec.  The cylinder walls stretch slightly when fired, and then contract on the expanded brass, holding them tightly.  Coupled with that, the cylinders did not have a polished inner surface.  That roughness helped to grip the empty cases even more tightly.  The solution was to return the gun to Ruger.  They replaced the cylinder with one at the lower end of diameter tolerances, with a better polish of the inner surfaces.  Now, factory ammo comes out easily, and even my hot loads only take a bit of a tunk on the extractor to get them to pop out.

Success is a journey, not a destination...  Might as well enjoy the ride!!

Just remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.  You can rely on 911 or on 1911. The choice is yours.

The 480 is still out there .
Hamilton Bowen has one in a 5 shot 480 Ruger on his site for $2700+,better jump on it while you can,I would have if I could have gotten a 5" barrel but he is too far along on the build to change barrel length.
