22 hornet
« on: October 03, 2007, 04:22:29 AM »
Im looking for advice on this cartridge. I wanted something I could bring along when coyote hunting with my shotgun, for those dogs that just dont want to come in to shotty range. Longest shot I would consider taking is 150 ish depending on the round and if this is doable with this round out of a handgun.

From what I have read this is a fairly "quiet" round and has very little recoil.

what I would like to know is how many of you guys use it for yotes/fox, and what ranges are you shooting out of your handguns.

I was looking at a 10" for it. Seems like a fun round an down the road ill probably reload for it if I get one.
 THanks

Mine is on the Encore platform and is the 22 K-Hornet.  It's a 15inch T/C Custom Shop barrel and it is very accurate.  I just rescope it to a Nikon Bushmaster scope for longer ranges (200yd plus).  Easy round to reload or form from Hornet brass.

Dave,  My experience is from long ago ( early eighties ), had a 10" bull barrel for my contender in 22 Hornet.  After I finally found what it liked it was deadly accurate to 100 yds.  At 50 yds it would cut one big hole, at 100 yds it opened up to quarter sized groups, not bad for a 10 incher with a 4X on it. Only shot one hog ( groundhog) with it, didn't do the damage my 22-250 will do , but dead is dead.  I'd have to look at my old logs to be certain, but believe the loading to be IMR 4227 behind a Sierra 40 grain, with CCI small pistol primers.  As far a recoil...there wasn't any....but you've been misled on the noise part, mine had a very sharp crack....don't misunderstand me, not a loud as some ...but certainly not quiet. I believe you could find a better round, but maybe not in a 10 inch barrel. Hope this helps out.

Look at the 17HMR I've had excellent accuracy with mine and accuracy out to 150yds should not be a problem.  Another possibility is the 5.7x28, course this would be a custom barrel as TC doesn't chamber for it but a 22mag barrel could be rechambered succsefully and it to will reach out there not a lot of noise.

Not mine but this is a 22mag barrel rechambered to 5.7x28

This is my 14 inch Encore barrel in 5.7x27

Coyotes at 150 yards with a 10" 22 Hornet.   While possible if all the stars are aligned, that certainly is not a good choice for this scenario.   The many reasons why and the ramifications of them would take pages to type.   There are plenty of way better choices for your Contender than a 10" 22 Hornet barrel.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Thanks for the replies.
I had a .17 hmr, but I traded it and went with the .22 mag. The .17 was just too destructive on smaller stuff but very very accurate.

I think Im going to get a 10" barrel for the .30-30 Ill try and work up some good loads for coyotes/fox. Have taken yotes with my rifle and really didnt blow them up real badly.  I already have the 14" barrel but it gets to be a little much to carry all the gear and then that and sticks too.

Thanks again for the replies.
