Got my Moose !!!!
« on: October 03, 2007, 08:41:20 AM »
Hunted in Newfoundland, area 11,and shot this moose on 9/27. My guide called it in from 1200 yards out and I shot it offhand at 210 yards. A very physically demanding hunt, walking thru swamp and climbing alot of mountains.

cONGRATS ON THE MOOSE!!  What did you use for a gun and ammo? I got a moose a couple of years ago that looks about the size you have ( 600lbs)? It was not the moose my father had planned on but it was a great eating moose. I would rather have one to eat than to stuff! I was using a 30-06 with 180 gr bullets. 187 yds.

The gun is a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 win mag. I was shooting Federal Vital shok, loaded with Barnes 180 grain MRX bullet.

Congrats on your Moose!  A moose hunt is on my list of things to do before I die and Newfoundland sounds like a great place to go.  How many did you see?

I saw 6 to 10 moose everyday I hunted. The trick was to locate a bull WITHOUT a cow.My guide would call and the bulls with cows would look, but not leave their cows.My moose was alone,so he thought he hit the jackpot.Sure made my day. I hunted with Long Range Outfitters.Their web site is: www.hunt-a-moose.com   The cost was $3500, which included license, room and board.

How did you get the animal out, cut up, butchered, packaged and frozen for transportation.

My guide and I skinned and quartered it,then hauled it out with 4 wheelers.Once in camp, the meat was boned out and frozen in coolers, for the ride back to Michigan. A friend then vacuum packed the meat, which was approx 325 lbs.

Hmm $3500 plus transportation of course for 325 pounds of meat. That works out to only $10.77 per pound. Even ribeye steaks are cheaper than that most places. Of course it's not as much fun hunting ribeye steaks in the grocery store now is it?  ;D

I'd love to take a moose before I die but the older I get the less chance there seems to be of that happening. Congrats on a fine hunt. Are you getting a shoulder mount made up for it?
